MAKE: Inspiration and Inkjet Fabric

With copyright being such an issue on the internet, anything that helps a designer stay as original as possible is a godsend.

fabrics over the last few years has been a revelation.

I work primarily as a collage artist so copyright is something I have been aware of for a long time - using other artist’s images is a big no-no, as tempting as it may be at times. I do occasionally use vintage imagery that is copyright free, but in order to develop my style I take a lot of my own photos to use in my paintings instead.

The same applies to my handbound sketchbooks. Finding unusual fabrics and papers is incredibly difficult and it’s hard to express my own style when using shop bought fabrics, so the introduction of inkjet printable

There are different types of fabrics available now and the quality is improving all the time. Whilst inkjet fabric may not be suitable for larger sewing projects, it is perfect for smaller ones where the finished item doesn’t need a lot of washing as it can be a little delicate. But, don’t let this put you off, it is a great product!

Ideas and Inspiration

Stick to what you know - I do simple little doodles on paper and in my sketchbooks, inspired by flowers in the garden, looking close up at patterns that form in nature and experimenting with colour swatches.
