FOCUS: Newcastle Craft Mafia

Leeanne Lowe is one of the founding members of the Newcastle Craft Mafia (NCM on Twitter) and also juggles a career as a textiles teacher as well as being the mother of 2 small boys aged 2 and 4. Leeanne is also the creative talent behind the brand Sitting On The Wall which specialises in textiles with an emphasis on embroidery. Leanne uses reclaimed and vintage materials to make her range of children’s garments, gifts, craft packs and accessories.

We asked Leanne why she decided to set up a Craft Mafia? Leanne

says, “I am always really eager to share my love of textiles with others. Then I met Cassandra Harrison, co- founder of the Newcastle CM, at the Makers Faire in Newcastle (this

Building up membership to form a Craft Mafia must be quite an involved process? Leanne explains,

“To become a Craft Mafia, you need to have a minimum of 3 founding members. So, we started off by building a website and then used social networking and word of mouth to advertise ourselves. Our first meeting attracted 15 people, 11 of which signed up.
