standard deviation on his linear, these being foot angle (1.24), Udder support (1.06) and finally rear teat placement (1.06), which may be a perceived benefit or not depending on your system and type of cow. Meanwhile slight negative type deviations are seen with chest width (-0.28), high pins (-0.56) and rear leg set as viewed from the side (-0.56), with the first two traits potential concerns, although neither are extreme negatives. Elvina daughters also score just below zero for temperament which maybe an issue for some breeders. With approaching 40 daughters contributing to his

production figures, representing daughters in 22 herds, Elvina is over 240 kg milk and offers good weights of both fat and protein (+0.15 and +0.12% protein) and a combined weight of 40 kg fat and protein, which will contribute to his £41 PIN and massive £158 PLI, making him the highest newcomer to the top PLI rankings in the UK and the third highest PLI sire with a UK proof behind Oman and Goldwyn. He also comes inside the Top 40 sires available in the UK ranked on PLI, extolling his value to herds still selecting principally on the PLI system. Elvina offers a pleasing plus on Fertility Index (0.5) and a positive Lifespan, both of which will contribute to his big PLI. A SCC of +7 suggests avoiding his use on high cell count dams as a precautionary measure, while his direct calving ease can be considered average at -0.9. Elvina’s daughters are likely to be hard working herd cows, deviating only slightly from their dams. His daughters will walk well enough as he scores 0.64 on locomotion, while they may lack a little condition due to their productivity. In conclusion, an average type proof accompanies this sire who offers a different sire stack and good components with a big index.

programmes; here we assess the merits and flaws of two new candidates

from the same family as the popular Stormatic son Sanchez. Durham Emily has a 15,000 kg plus lactation, admittedly with such a volume lacking high constituents. Her mating to the Storm son Titanic resulted in new type leader Emphasis. The family has also been developed in the UK in the Loford, Caritas and Primlowe herds. Durham Emily has four completed lactations so far,

with three in excess of 13,000 kg with the American cow producing a sire who offers a 233 kg milk proof coupled with a poor fat percentage (-0.12%) and negative protein of -0.05%, causing a -£1 PIN and £25 PLI. Dairy Daughters, who are marketing Emphasis, have a calving ease sire (+1.4 dCE%) who can reduce cell count in his daughters all things being equal, and a 0.1 lifespan with a slightly poor fertility index score of -2.9. As mentioned previously, Emphasis’ linear is where he excels, albeit with extremes. As a newcomer with 3.15 Type Merit he secures top spot ahead of more reliable compatriots Xacobeo and Goldwyn, aided by a Mammary composite of over 3 points and a Feet & Legs composite over 1.5, ensuring he will frequently come out of computer mating programmes where emphasis is put on composite scores. However, the point with this sire is that he offers a number of extremes in his linear, which depending on an individual farmer’s breeding polices may not be all for the good. Emphasis daughters in many respects show

many of the traits of Emphasis’ sire Titanic’s linear. Emphasis daughters will be of above average stature but lack frame in terms of chest width and body depth although they will not be extreme (-0.82 angularity). His daughters’ biggest flaw is likely to be his extreme straightness of leg (-3.05) coupled with steep, steep foot angle (3.34), which suggests his use should be limited to very sickle legged and flat footed females. Mammary systems are where we expect the best in Emphasis daughters; he is also the highest available sire for Udder composite, joined only by Gen-I-Beq Bolton at over 3.0 for Mammary composite. His daughters’ udders will be nailed on the fore udder and carried very high above the hock, with a really high rear udder (3.07) and a strongly defined ligament running between the quarters. Teats both fore and rear are also on the inside of the quarter (circa 1.5) and teat length is slightly long at 0.39, combining to generate a world class udder improver. Lacking any UK daughters, his management traits are based on his country of origin in the UK, but they show no concerns for either milking speed or milking disposition.
