Top sires making an improvement on dams
THESE TABLES IDENTIFY which sires have the largest percentage of daughters given a higher heifer classifi cation score than their dams as heifers. Daughters are only included in the statistics if both daughter and dam calved their fi rst before 30 months of age and were both classifi ed within six months of calving. Any sire is included in the list irrespective of semen availability, so herd sires may also appear.

Cogent confirmed as having top type bulls
UK breeding company Cogent has strengthened its position as Europe’s top type bull stud, following a visit from Holstein UK’s classifiers. Two hot new bulls - Cogent Azure and
Woodmarsh Metalic – have both been classified by the breed society with an EX95 score, bringing the total number of live bulls at the stud with this exceptional score to five. This places the Cogent stud far ahead of its closest rivals throughout the whole of Europe for bull conformation. “As a company, Cogent has built its reputation
on producing bulls which will breed the type of cow the farmer wants to milk, and our latest figures convincingly reinforce this position,” says sire analyst Simon Moseley. “We now have five bulls on the premises with EX95 scores, as well as compelling evidence that each of these bulls passes his high type credentials on to his daughters. “I doubt whether you would find five bulls of this type calibre on any other single premises in the world. “Our analysts have years of experience in sire selection and whatever fads in breeding come and go, they always regard it as important to breed a cow that is durable and able to withstand the rigours of modern-day milk production, as well as being a pleasure to milk,” adds Mr Moseley. “If the bull himself has a strong conformation and constitution to start with, then that stacks the odds in the farmer’s favour when it comes to his milking daughters.” The stud’s five bulls classified EX95 are Dalbytop
Phil, Cogent Loader, Netherside Dynamo, Woodmarsh Metalic and Cogent Azure.

Dairy Daughters purchased by WWS USA
UK cattle breeding company Dairy Daughters has been sold to World Wide Sires, California, USA. This now makes Dairy Daughters part of the world’s largest cattle AI business. Dairy Daughters has earned a reputation over many years for its
innovation, its successful business model and its direct marketing software, all of which have enabled the company to grow into a thriving business serving the UK’s farmers. However, the forthcoming retirement of its former owner and managing director, Evans Drayton, meant a sale was almost inevitable, and the strong links the company has developed with World Wide Sires meant this company was always a likely buyer. Mr Drayton has committed to remain with Dairy Daughters as managing director for the next three years.“This purchase is very important for our staff and our customers because it means we as a business will continue to thrive, while our customers will benefit from the high calibre of genetics we have always sourced through WWS,” said Mr Drayton. “Equally, management, sales and support teams will all remain the same.” For its part, World Wide Sires, USA – which is the international marketing business for the US co-operatives Select Sires and Accelerated Genetics and also represents European studs Masterrind, Xenética Fontao, Aberekin and Semenzoo in many markets throughout the world - gains an important strategic company. Dairy Daughters becomes the only distributorship it owns in the UK and adds a profitable company to its portfolio, whose business model can be replicated elsewhere. “We are delighted to have been able to purchase Dairy Daughters,” said Mike Rakes, WWS USA. “The business model and direct semen marketing software the company has so successfully developed will be an important part of our distributors’ businesses throughout the world, and are already being used in Australia, New Zealand and Spain.” Evans Drayton added: “Dairy Daughters has always been, and will remain an innovative business and has established a strong position in the UK based on outstanding value and good service. “We have offered customers some of the world’s greatest bulls like Oman, Patron and Braveheart, as well as exceptional value bulls like Kendall, RSVP and Duce, and will continue to do so under the WWS umbrella.”
