YOUNG BREEDERS
SOUTH & WILTSHIRE HYB
n Saturday 1 May, 25 members and supporters of South & Wiltshire HYB met at the home of the Noremead herd at Winterbourne Monkton, by kind permission of Robert Cooper, for a hands- on demonstration of ‘How to choose your show calf’. The session was led by Terry Cox and Malcolm Hillyer who invited members to choose a calf and to give their reasons as to why they thought their calf would make a good show calf. The afternoon was rounded off with ten pin bowling at Swindon. A very useful and informative time was had by all and many thanks must go to Terry and Malcolm for giving their time and expertise and also to Anthea and Jeff Daw for arranging the demonstration.

very strong classes of heifers and cows and both classes gave the youngsters plenty to think about in their placings. Senior volunteers to give reasons included Pete Marshall and Steve Hill who both had different ideas to the judge, but gave very good reasons as to why they had placed their cows in the order they had chosen. Master Judge Mark Nutsford then gave his chosen order and reasons in a very clear concise way, enabling the members to see why he had done so. The senior members who scored highly were John Lomax in first place, Simon Little in second and Paul Fenton in third place. Mark Nutsford then listened to the HYB members give their order and reasons.
The winners of the Reason Giving Competitions were:
Senior (Dugdale Nutrition Cup): Tom Hill Intermediate (Hydaways Cup):
Junior (Malcolm Watson Cup): Mark Whitehurst
The second evening was held at James Pickford’s and again two very good classes of heifers and cows were presented to the waiting crowds. Master Judge Bryan Challenor of World Wide Sires heard some good examples of reasons from Andy Cope,
