TOP PLI FEMALES

Following the April proof run, there are a number of movers and shakers in the Top PLI Females list generated by the

Centre for Dairy Information for Holstein UK. We did, however, consider it of interest to draw some conclusions from this snapshot. Which sires are

dominating? Do the high index animals also classify well?

Which breeders have the most cows in the listings?

And we take a look at some

specifi c cow families that are dominating the Top 50 PLI list.

ABOVE The Marie family at Denmire, backed by three generations of EX94 LP100 cows, dominates the herd.

Denmire Marie 52 scored VG87 as a 2-year-old before completing a fi rst 305 day lactation of 11,119 kg at 5.29% fat and 3.29% protein, while she calved her second in July 2009. Despite being fl ushed to Howie and Shottle, she only has one daughter so far, an ET Howie born in May 2009 with a PLI of £158. Just £3 PLI lower at £334 is the fi rst Northern Irish

representative, Sperrin Champion Ivory VG87 who

is a thirteenth generation VG or EX descendant of the Robthom Ivory Mark family via Mark Shadwick’s Skyhigh herd and Jim Morrison’s Inch herd. A Calbrett–I HH Champion daughter who has already yielded a massive second lactation of 17,067 kg at 4.86% fat and 3.22% protein, Champion Ivory has so far only had two sons, by Damion and Shottle.

Top PLI individuals

With a PLI of £337, top spot in the April 2010 proof run belongs to Denmire

Goldwyn Marie 52 VG87 owned by

the Dennison family from Ulverston in Cumbria. A daughter of top index and

type sire Braedale Goldwyn, Marie 52’s

pedigree doesn’t get much better as she is bred from the three generations of EX94 LP100 cows. Her dam is the 10*

EX94-3E Denmire Storm Marie 12, grand

dam is the EX94-5E 7* Denmire Prelude Marie 3 and third dam is the founder of

Third place on the list falls to another Marie from Denmire, this time Denmire Shottle Marie 57 VG87. Marie 57 is out of the VG89 Morty daughter of Storm Marie EX94-3E, so closely related to the trailblazer Marie 52. She has a fi rst lactation exceeding 12,000 kg at over 5.4% fat and 3.7% protein and has a £265 PLI daughter by Goldwyn. Close on her heels is Inch Storm Ivory 2, dam of Sperrin

Champion Ivory.

Only seven females have a PLI over £300 which, in addition to these above, include two members of William and Andrew McCollum’s Ballycairn Tinnie family (see The Journal, October 2009 issue, page 22), Ballycairn Garter Tinnie VG88

and the VG87 Goldwyn Tinnie. A third Goldwyn Marie from Denmire; Denmire

Goldwyn Marie 51 VG88, makes up the group with £306 PLI. Three different families and breeders make up the remainder of the top ten.

Both Riverdane PS Sara EX90 and Acecroft Goldwyn Lila Z VG87 are now owned

by Willsbro and have had high priced daughters sold through their recent sale.
