SALES SUMMARY

Record smashed at 10th Anniversary sale at Beeston

The Western Holstein Club held their 10th Anniversary Show

and Sale at Beeston Castle Auction on Thursday 25 March to celebrate the ten years since they transferred their sales from Crewe to Beeston and what a sale it was with great demand for everything on offer and a new record price of 8200gns for a milking heifer at these sales.

The sale attracted an entry of 160 head, which included a small but very select offering of superbly bred maiden heifers and heifer calves. Judging at this sale was Philip Davies of Gornal. For his champion he selected Woodmarsh Shottle Lyme 55 from the herd of Mick Gould, an outstanding daughter of Shottle and bred from eight successive generations of VG or EX. In reserve was Misjay Denholme Maude from Jane Arrell, Wem, a Stormatic daughter also bred from eight generations of top classified dams. Cattle were distributed from Scotland to South Wales and to

Essex. Apart from a couple of special individuals which stole the show somewhat, trade was very level with demand being particularly strong for the powerful heifers with good udders and lots of milk. Frailer, narrower heifers, irrespective of how milky they were, were harder to clear in comparison. The highlight of the whole day was the sale of the Champion female from the Gould family; this quite outstanding heifer displayed all the attributes required in a modern, top class animal. Bidding opened at 3000gns and quickly soared past the previous record of 6000gns until the hammer finally fell at 8200 gns to Martin Evans buying for his Pryddbwll herd at Llangedwyn, Oswestry. The next top seller in the milking heifers was Aintree Goldwyn Nugget E ET GP84-2yr from Richard and Ruth Pilkington of Wrexham, a very powerful Goldwyn daughter bred from the high component and high type Nugget family. She sold to Hywel and Sheila Evans, Llansilin, Oswestry. The Reserve Champion was next in line selling at 2900gns to D Bunting & Son, New Abbey, Dumfries. Two more milkers made 2600 gns each which included the top priced cow Preview Ja- Bob Quality from Andrew Rutter of Haslington, an outstanding Red and White November calved second calf daughter of Ja- Bob Jordan Red which sold to Ted Fearon of Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria. Also selling at this price was Fieldside Yarrow 55, a daughter of Denmire Monitor from Harry and Vera Jolly of Great Eccleston, Preston which sold to Robbie Bell of Knutsford. The inclusion at the end of the sale of a special section for superbly bred heifer calves under the title ‘Excellent calves from Excellent Dams’ added to the sale celebrations and was well received by purchasers. Top in this section was 4900gns for Sterndale Lightning Ghost from Bill Nadin; this August 2009 daughter of Lylehaven Lightning has three VG-2yr sisters and her seven nearest dams are all EX and sold to Mark Robinson of Faddiley, Nantwich. Two calves made 4600gns each; the first was Chaterley Goldwyn Adeena ET from Stan Price of Stockport, a Goldwyn from the heart of the noted Alicia family selling to Albert Innes-Smith of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the second was Excel Jeeves Sally, a July 2009 Jeeves daughter who is sister to the noted show cow Styche Lyster Sally EX93. She was purchased by M J & J M Thomasson of Worleston, Nantwich for their Astlowhall herd

Embryos were a mixed trade and topped at 520gns per egg for sexed semen eggs sired by Riverdane Adventure Red out of

Baileys Lakeside Molli Red EX90.

Averages: 29 cows £1808, 85 milking heifers £2095, 2 in-calf heifers £2037; 8 maiden heifers £3596, 124 head £2124.
