AWARDS SUMMARY

A review body has been set up to take a fresh look at the Holstein UK award system.

It has always been a Society priority to recognise cows of merit, whether through classifi cation, achieving outstanding levels of pro- duction, improving the dairy population through their offspring or a combination of all-round success.

The dairy industry continues to progress and it is important to rec- ognise those individuals within the breed that contribute to the im- provement of the black and white population. Full details of changes to the award system will be published as soon as they are available, however in the meantime, you can still apply for offi cial recognition at current levels. Awards include;

SP and LP awards (£1.10 per award)

Superior Producer status is awarded to heifers exceeding 700kgs CFP and cows exceeding 800kgs in a single 305 day lactation and with a minimum Production Index of 105

Lifetime Producer awards can be applied for once a cow has achieved over 50 tons of milk, 1,850kgs fat and 1,600kgs protein. Minimum requirements for fat and protein weights continue until LP100 when a cow is awarded the Gold ribbon irrespective of solids. BOTH THE SP AND LP AWARDS CAN BE GRANTED AUTOMATICALLY - simply let the offi ce know that you would like this service

Star Brood Cow (£11 per initial award, £5 per recalculation) 8 points are required for each star attributed to a cow with prog- eny superseding the minimum requirements of three daughters scored GP and three with a minimum of 100 Production Index in any lactation. This particular level however would only yield one point for each, therefore six in total. More points are scored with higher classifi cation scores, higher PI’s and Star Brood progeny. Sons add to the overall score when a positive PTA over 50% reliable is achieved. PLEASE INFORM THE OFFICE IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO APPLY FOR STAR BROOD STATUS ON ANY OF YOUR COWS

NEWS, VIEWS AND EVENTS

- keep up to date with the latest news from Holstein UK

prominent women involved in our industry. When the topic was first mooted, there was a suggestion that it would appear patronis- ing and make us guilty of tokenism. I can assure you that we have tried hard

T

to remain innocent of both charges as we take a look at three herds where women have played and are playing a leading role; Gaer, Hernehouse and Shawdale. This doesn’t mean that we fail to appreciate the leading roles taken by women in pedigree herds the length and breadth of the UK, but allows us to find out more about three excel- lent herds that deserve a higher profile. We’ve also talked to four women who’ve made successful careers outside production farming, but whose hearts are fully committed to the industry. The answers they gave to our questions make fas- cinating reading (see pages 22-25). In our report from the Dairy Technology

Workshop, recently held at Harper Adams, Alison Maddrell summarises some of the more relevant topics reviewed during the day. The work on ‘Cow Signals’ and grazing the high yielding cow are of particular interest, although more time is needed to fully evaluate how best they can be used to improve health and welfare in our herds. As this issue goes to press, we have a summer

of activity to look forward to. It’s worth noting here that two HYB events have date changes. The Competition Day is now going to be on Saturday 10 July at Greville Hall Farm, Hinton on the Green, near Evesham by kind permission of the Miller family, whilst the Weekend Rally is now taking place in Cheshire on 3-5 September. In the showring, this will be the first summer without a Stoneleigh Royal Show, but with the other Royal and many County shows going from strength to strength, we still anticipate some fierce competition over the season and look for- ward to printing pictures of as many Champions as we can over the next few issues. The first major event of the season, The Royal Ulster Show, or Balmoral as it’s more commonly known, is report- ed on pages 44-45. This issue also includes a feature on some of the work CDI has been doing analysing data and trends. The first in a regular series of articles looks at age at first calving and examines how this affects herd life - see pages 40-42. As always, we hope you find plenty of interest
