SALES SUMMARY

90,000gns new record at Willsbro

A new record for a dairy animal sold at auction in the UK was established at the first Willsbro Sale, held at the Royal Cornwall Showground at Wadebridge, when the five month old Willsbro Emilyann ET was sold for 90,000 guineas. Impressive figures from the new genomic technology coupled with the fact that her dam Wabash-Way Emilyann is one of the hottest properties in world cattle breeding, having been sold for $630,000 in 2008, conspired to make her first daughter sold in Europe and the subject of terrific interest when five different parties bid in excess of 50,000 guineas to try and secure her. Finally it was Jose Agustin Celis Romero who made the final 90,000 guinea bid to take her back to his Granja La Ponderosa in Cantabria, Spain. Another Ensenada Taboo Planet full sister to the top priced calf was next through the ring and it took a 30,000gns bid from Maurice Jones to take her back to the Calcourt herd near Welshpool. Another high genomic tester was the three month old Willsbro Sara Million ET, whose dam is an EX 16,000 kg daughter of the noted prizewinning Copywood Integrity Sara Red. She was finally knocked down at 45,000gns to a syndicate headed by David Adam, Piltdown, Sussex, with Willsbro Holsteins retaining an interest. Sheikha Alkhalifa of Sahara Holsteins had tried hard to add

the Emilyann calf to her select herd in Monmouthshire, but did manage to purchase Willsbro Shottle Ashlyn ET at 20,000gns. Her granddam was Intermediate Champion at the recent National Show and third dam is the legendary Tri-Day Ashlyn. A feature of the sale was the international interest shown with animals being sold to France, Germany, Holland, Spain and the Republic of Ireland, although it was transatlantic interest which secured the next highest price with a Canadian consortium from Mapel Wood Farms, Genervations Inc and O’Connor Land & Cattle Co purchasing a Shottle granddaughter of Lylehaven Lila Z for 12,000gns. Another Lila Z, this time by Kerndtway Howie, heads north to join the Holgate family’s Aliann herd in Yorkshire for 10,000gns. Also going to Spain at 12,000gns is Willsbro Sho Rachel, the Reserve Champion Calf at the recent National Show and a

granddaughter of the twice 15,000 kg Rockset Faber Rachel EX93. Top priced milker in the sale was a superb calved heifer from the Roxy family. Messrs Wills had purchased her Comestar Leader dam in Messrs Burrow’s Stardale sale four years ago. She still looks in tremendous form having completed over 100 tonnes of milk and her Shottle daughter now heads back to Lancashire with Robert Burrow. At the same Global Glamour Sale where Wabash-Way Emilyann was sold, Messrs Wills made a major investment

when purchasing Lavender Ruby Redrose’s Shottle daughter

for $255,000. They had the first return on their investment, selling two of her Goldwyn daughters for 12,000 and 11,000gns, both head to Wales, the first to Neville Roberts of Dulais and the other to Sheikha Alkhalifa. Despite some very good prices, there were still some splendid animals sold at much lesser prices and it is certain that there will be some very satisfied purchasers, particularly among the many local breeders that supported the sale. Over 30 young bulls were sold and two made over 3,000gns, both going to Welsh herds.

Those that made the visit were treated to two days of tremendous Cornish hospitality. On the day before the sale, the Wills family opened their magnificent 1,000 cow dairy to the public and this was followed by a dinner in Newquay with the guest speaker being the internationally renowned judge Brian Carscadden from Canada. There was a terrific atmosphere at the sale, and the Wills family ladies worked tirelessly to provide refreshment for the entire gathering. In all it was a Master Class in sale presentation and the next sale will be eagerly awaited by everyone in the Holstein industry. Messrs Wills have been great investors in the industry in

recent years and it was good to see their endeavours rewarded with a

good crowd and some excellent prices. Averages: 22 cows & calved
