Farmers have to trust your ability, knowledge, experience and you have to gain credibility.

How do you see the future

of the Holstein industry?

Dawn - It will need to be more diverse, I see genomics taking breeding to a different level – it’s here so we should utilise it as a positive. The biggest danger to ‘us’ is arrogance and ego; these are times to be inclusive and promote this breed as the only one that can do any job on any farm for any business – I believe it’s purely a question of education. Jane - Bright. There is and always has been a Holstein cow to suit everyone, we just are not always very good at promoting the fact. Karen - Creativity will rule supreme. Breeders, and industry personnel, who make it a practice to ‘think outside the box’, will continue to not only survive, but improve. We all need to throw out the notion of “this is how we’ve done business for the past 20 years”. Instead, we all need to explore what’s available to help us – whether that’s using new technology, new bulls, trying new markets, having a live broadcast of Holstein World online every day....the possibilities are defi nitely out there. We will continue to face all kinds of challenges, but those only make us better at our jobs. A few years ago, the internet was such a new concept, and in

2009, we had over two million unique visitors to holsteinworld.com. Two million visitors are getting their news from our website...what a thought! Not only is that good for the news and stories that we post online, but it’s great for our customers who want to expand their marketing efforts. The future is as bright and unlimited as we want to make it. Sheila - The future is bright for Holstein breeders. The industry has developed enormously over the past 20 years and UK cattle now rank with the best in the world. UK farmers have used the best available bulls, imported embryos from world renowned cow families and we’ve shown the UK can compete on an international basis by developing our own proven bulls such as Picston Shottle. We need to continue to market our cattle at the highest level internationally and portray UK Holstein breeding in the best possible way. And professional photography will remain an important aspect in helping to create that all important image!
