BREEDERS ACHIEVEMENTS
British Friesians for long life at Cromlow
Two cows have recently achieved lifetime milestones in J Lowcock and Sons’ Cromlow herd from Nateby, near Garstand in Lancashire.
Cromlow Dusk 66 has given 100 tons of milk in her thirteenth lactation. She continues a proud family tradition as her dam gave 89 tonnes and grand dam over 90 tonnes. Her full brother, Cromlow Major, was in the herd for nearly 14 years while their sire, Terling Trumpet Major, was the twelfth calf out of Terling Torch 440 BFE. Cromlow Molly 7 has also given 100 tonnes of milk in her thirteenth lactation. Her sire was Cromlow Major, mentioned above. She had a bad start after calving as a heifer; she could not stand up for two weeks, was milked by hand and thereafter we put calves on her. It was two months before she came into the parlour to start her milking life but she is still going strong and now in calf for the fouteenth time. It sometimes pays to persevere. That’s British Friesian longevity!

Barnby Moor Astre Annie 138 EX94-6E LP100
Bred & Owned by A R Beckett & Sons, West Midlands
Sired by Duregal Astre Starbuck from a VG
Flemingdale Roland, Astre Annie 138’s grand dam
was a VG Hanoverhill Inspiration whilst her third
dam, Annie 40 VG by Barold Rockbuster, was
herself a 100 tonne cow. Astre Annie 138 was classified VG85 points as a heifer, VG89 as a second calver before moving on to score EX91 in her third lactation. The only time she has been off the farm was to go to the last BHS Judging School, hosted by the East Midlands Club, when she was a heifer. She was placed first or second by the budding judges in a very strong class of six heifers.
She has been entered in many individual classes in East Midlands Herd Competitions, the highlight being placed second in the ‘Best Cow’ class two years running.
One disappointment has been her reluctance to produce heifers; only two so far, her eight and ninth calves. However, her daughters by Windy-Knoll-View Primetime and Stookey Elm-Park Redstar both classified VG85 as two-year-olds. Astre Annie 138 is now dry, awaiting her eleventh calf. A little greyer but still in good form.… .fingers crossed.

Long Sunday afternoon at Sandyridge
When Sandyridge Formation Satin 33 VG87 started calving on the morning of Sunday 28 March this year with her eighth calf, we did not think it was going to be a long drawn out job. But at 1.30pm, the cowman realised something was wrong and, on examining her, he found the calf’s head was down. He tried to get it up, but it was too far down for him to turn. So the vet was called to give assistance, and that proved to be unsuccessful. She then called for a second vet and nurse, thinking they would have to perform an operation. That was when I was awoken from my Sunday afternoon nap, I wasn’t too keen on the idea of an operation, so the second vet spent a long time trying to reach for the head. By this time, it was thought the calf was dead. So there was a debate about cutting the calf inside the cow. But we decided to see if another vet could reach the head, and turn it round into place. He was a very tall man with long arms and, within about three minutes, he had the calf in the right place, we then pulled it out. And to the amazement of us all, the calf was alive; the time was 5.30 pm. It was a heifer calf, it has been registered as Sandyridge Mason Satin 82.
