Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association –

CCBA has a Board of Directors made up of men and women with diverse backgrounds from a variety of occupations. It provides office space in its building for the Chinese Center, which performs social services to the community, and it provides a place where the Chinese Senior Citizen's Center can meet and have luncheons. In 1999 it completed the adjacent Senior Garden Apartments, with affordable housing for qualifying seniors regardless of race. The Community Room of the Senior Garden has become the site for many CCBA activities, such as luncheons, membership meetings, reunions, traditional Chinese celebrations, Chinese movies, cultural performanc- es, classes and lectures. The Lucky Lion Dancers are sponsored by the CCBA and are an integral part of the Chinese celebrations, espe- cially during the Chinese New Year. CCBA joins other local organi- zations in welcoming visiting dignitaries, holding New Year banquets, a Dragon Boat Festival, and special occasions of significance to the Chinese community. It also sells cemetery plots and every Spring observes Chinese Memorial Day

The Chinese Community Church of San Diego is a Christ

centered, multi-cultural and multi-generational church united in serv-

ing the Lord. The current congregation is a diverse cross-section of the community with services conducted in English. Chinese Community Church seeks to serve its members by providing them with opportuni- ties for spiritual, physical, intellectual, social, and cultural develop- ment with its mission “to fulfill God’s vision, share Christ’s love, and tansformlives, and by so doing, to ‘advance the gospel.’” The church provides a warm setting for worship and fellowship not only for the his- toric Chinese community in San Diego but also for its current congre- gation, a diverse gathering of people from many ethnic backgrounds. All services are conducted in English.

David Seid is proud of the legacy of community service inherited from his moth- er and grandfather, a founder in 1935 of the House of China cultural and education- al organization in Balboa Park. His moth- er was a pioneer Chinese student at San Diego State College who worked on China relief and efforts to avoid the catastrophes of war. Living up to his Chinese name of “Xian Rong” meaning “Glorious Achievement” has been natural for David, who early in life was active in Church and earned distinction in high school as Senior Class President. With a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Southern California, he began a 35-year career in government and seeing a need and wanting to do more for the Chinese community, he readily spent his energies on the House of Chinain Balboa Park and the Chinese Language School Essay Contest, now in its 15th year. David remains a driving force to spread Chinese culture to the mainstream by working on the San Diego Zoo’s acquisition of Pandas and other outreach.
