a company or organization whose socially responsible practices have served as a founda- tion for a better comunity and society locally or internationally.
The highlight of the evening will be presen- tation of the Special Recognition Award to San Diego legend Tom Hom, the first Asian American from San Diego to be elected to City Council and the California Assembly, paving the way for other minorities seeking office. In addition, the Awards will honor achievers in 14 categories whose abbreviated bios and photos appear in this edition of ASIA. The bios will also appear on the websites
www.AsianHeritageSociety.org and
www.AsiaMediaInc.com with accompanying ballot for voting. The top honoree in each cate- gory will be announced during the ceremony.
The list of nominees begins on page 3.

Hom , 84, grew up among 12 children at a time when politics was not part of the Asian radar in San Diego. In the 1960s, he was to change that by becoming the first Asian elected to public office in San Diego. Hom’s civic leadership is also legendary.
In 1972, he petitioned property owners in
San Diego’s Gaslamp to form a development district, which eventually led to formation of the Gaslamp Quarter and the opening of Horton Plaza. Hom’s hand in San Diego’s development is widespread and includes pio- neering efforts to add a professional sports sta- dium in San Diego, which became the home of the San Diego Padres and Chargers. As with the Special Recognition Award, “the Social Responsibilty Award will be a regu-
lar part of the Asian Heritage Awards from now on,” said Rosalynn Carmen, president of The Asian Heritage Society, producers of the annu- al event.
The award will be presented by a major San Diego corporation whose name will be announced in the next two weeks. Asian Heritage Awards Committee members this year include co-chair and community leader Sally Wong-Avery, co-chair and busi- nessman David Du, honorary co-chair and County Supervisor Ron Roberts and commit-
tee members Dr. Binh Tran, Dr. Otto Lee, Dr. Bruce Johnson, former Councilman Brian Maienschein, Jaye Van Kirk, Giovanna Pang Garcia, Navy Capt. Myles Esmele, Dennis-Michael Broussard and Areeluck
Rose Parnsoonthorn, Society executive direc- tor.
