Asian Heritage Awards 2010: Honoring a San Diego icon and social responsibility

First it was Wall Street. Now it’s British Petroleum. How many more examples of corporate irresponsibility and flagrant violations of the public trust will we see? Believe it or not, there are companies and organizations out there trying to do the right thing – companies like Cox Communications, QUALCOMM, Kyocera International and Ford, to name a few.

And when it comes to being socially responsible on a global scale, few organizations can match Habitat for Humanity, the international home builders for the poor made familiar by two of its more famous volunteers, for- mer President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn. The Carters’ involvement began in 1984 when they led a group to renovate a six-story apartment building in New York City that helped plant the seed for the Carter Work Project, an annual Habitat-related event in which the cou- ple lead volunteers on home building missions to parts of the world, including Asia.

Earlier this year, Habitat and the Carters launched a major project in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in the wake of other projects in northern Vietnam, China’s Yunnan Province, Laos and Cambodia. In all, since 1983, Habitat has built and rehabilitated some 75,000 homes, serving an estimated 375,000 people, throughout Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan and Singapore. For their work in Asia and for demonstrating a commit- ment to diversity, social awareness and environmental con- cern, the Asian Heritage Society is proud to announce the first ever Social Responsibility Award that will be present- ed to Habitat for Humanity July 10 aboard the USS Midway in downtown San Diego as part of the Seventh Annual Asian Heritage Awards. Reception begins at 6:30 p.m. The newly-inaugurated award focuses specifically on
