Letter from the Chairman

I am pleased to present you with the latest edition of Chemical Com- positions! This issue focuses on two kinds of energy. The first is the kind we normally think about and that comes in the form of calories. UT Austin has a long history of being at the forefront of this kind of energy research, development, and production, but as our fossil fuel reserves dwindle the faculty and students in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry are looking to the sun to power our needs in the future. In this issue you’ll read about new UT initiatives, led by departmental faculty, that ensure Texas’ continued presence in this important field.

The other kind of energy is the type required for leadership. Chemical Compositions editor M. A. Sims has written a great article about the many departmental faculty who have gone on to academic leadership positions here at UT and at other academic institutions. I hope you will enjoy this issue and learning more about both kinds of energy, as well as catching up on the other activities going on in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
