About That Toothbrush
Wait! Before you lather up the toothbrush
you bought on sale 3 years ago, take a minute to learn some facts that will help you become a better and more informed brusher. Any toothbrush you have used for more
than 3 or 4 months is history, as far as its ability to fight plaque is concerned. Plaque is a thin, colorless film of bacteria
that constantly forms on your teeth . If it is not removed, plaque can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. A worn-out toothbrush cannot effectively
clean off that plaque. Also, bent or broken bristles can injure your gums. Although individuals vary in how quickly they wear out a new toothbrush, generally your toothbrush is maximally effective for about one season. If you replace your brush each summer, autumn, winter, and spring, it will always be up-to-date in plaque fighting effectiveness -- never part of history.

Cookie’s Celebrates 18 Years of Business
submitted by Cookie’s Chuck Wagon
Memorial Day Weekend will mark the 18th anniversary of Hudson’s famous Cookie’s Chuck Wagon restaurant. Once called the “Cheers” of southern New Hampshire, Cookie’s is where families gather, business people meet, and singles go to just relax. “We want everyone to feel like they are at home,” says Dave Gilbert, who owns and operates this local breakfast spot, located in the Central Street Plaza on Route 111 in Hudson, with his wife, Li Ying. Customers even bring in their own coffee cup to use when they stop by, said Gilbert. Sometimes referred to as a Hudson landmark, Cookie’s serves only breakfast seven days a week. Opening as early as
Vehicles Collide as Motorist Attempts Turn
On May 21 at 5:33 p.m., members of the Hudson Police and Fire Departments responded to the intersection of Derry Road and Ledge Road for a motor-vehicle accident. Upon the officers’ arrival, it was determined that a 2008 Ford F-150 pick-up truck driven by Michael Tiedemann, 45, of Hudson was traveling south on Derry Road and stopped in the middle turn lane to make a left onto Ledge Road. A vehicle traveling north on Derry Road stopped to allow Tiedemann to make the turn onto Ledge Road. As Tiedemann was making the turn, a 2010 Toyota Venza driven by Jayme Motivala, 37, of Nashua, was traveling north on Derry Road. It appears that Motivala passed the stopped motorist along the right and collided with Tiedemann. Tiedemann was wearing his seat belt and was the lone occupant of his vehicle. Tiedemann complained of minor injuries and was treated at the scene by the Hudson Fire Department EMTs. Motivala was wearing her seatbelt and the airbags deployed in her car. Motivala’s nine-year- old daughter was also a passenger in the vehicle. Motivala and her daughter complained of minor injuries and were transported by the Hudson Fire Department to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center for treatment.
Alcohol does not appear to be a cause of the accident, and it remains under investigation.
5:30 a.m. weekday mornings and serving until 1 p.m. on weekends, Cookie’s boasts a six-page menu full of tasty breakfast choices. Cookie’s has always held the line on pricing to help families afford to gather, and now to kick off its 19th year, Cookie’s is introducing a Breakfast Rewards program and installing an ATM machine for its customers’ convenience. “We are eliminating all bank cards,” said
Gilbert. “In this way, we can give back to our customers instead of paying all the charges and fees to the big banks and credit card companies.”
At the same time, Cookie’s is joining
the move to encourage young people to eat healthy, exercise, and enjoy good oral health with a Junior Breakfast Club, where
the member pledges to do just that. “With a rewards card for the adults and a membership card and personalized photo Junior Breakfast Club pin for the kids, we have something for everyone,” Gilbert said. But Cookie’s has not forgotten how busy people can be, so its menu is online at
www.cookieschuckwagon.com. Whether eating in or ordering take-out, viewing the menu online can save a lot of time. Dave and Li Ying invite everyone to join them for breakfast on Monday, Memorial Day, from 7 a.m. to noon for a great breakfast. Sign up for the Rewards Club, and then be sure to bring the kids in to have their picture taken and sign up for the Junior Breakfast Club.
Hillsborough County Added to Recent Disaster Declaration
submitted by Colin Manning
The Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) has granted the state’s request to add Hillsborough County to the major disaster declaration for the damage and costs the state and communities incurred as a result of heavy rains, winds, and flooding that occurred March 14 through April 2. The disaster declaration issue on May
12 covered impacted communities in Rockingham County. However, the state asked for further consideration of counties that met the federal threshold. “The severe weather in March caused substantial flooding and damage in the southern part of the state, which
n
resulted in large costs for our state and communities. I am pleased that impacted communities in Hillsborough County will now be eligible for federal aid,” Governor Lynch said. “The state will continue to work with local communities to determine whether additional counties could be eligible.” Public assistance helps local communities and the state cover emergency operations and repair costs to infrastructure and public buildings. The declaration also included hazard mitigation for all 10 counties.

The fourth graders at Presentation of Mary Academy in Hudson have studied government this year and have also learned about the state of New Hampshire. The students visited the State House for their fourth grade field trip. During the visit to the State House, the classes had the pleasure of meeting Governor John H. Lynch.
After the field trip, one of the fourth graders, Kristyn Demers of Pelham, wrote a letter to Governor Lynch making a suggestion that we should have an official state color. Her suggestion was that the color be light purple because of the state flower being lilac, the bird being the purple finch, and the tree being the white birch. Kristyn received a personal letter from the Governor thanking her for writing him and listing

such compelling reasons for her suggestion. Governor Lynch also encouraged Kristyn to work with her State Representative or State Senator to introduce a bill regarding her suggestion of a state color of light purple.
