We report back from our somewhat extended stay in the Big Apple for the New York Tabletop Show
reports fantastic Spring market
A
pril saw the spring edition of the New York Tabletop Show once again in the iconic 41 Madison building.
The volcano related travel disruptions may have meant a few European visitors and tenants (‘Team Tableware’ included) enjoying a somewhat extended stay in the big city, but natural disasters aside, the show once again proved valuable and productive for both tenants and buyers alike. Laurie Burns, Senior Vice President
Celebrating Waterford Design Director Jim O’Leary and his 50th anniversary with the company were Forty One Madison’s Senior Vice President, Director, Laurie Burns and WWRD’s CEO Pierre deVillemejane.
Marchesa fashion designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig were on hand along with Peter Cameron, Lenox CEO, as the dinnerware brand launched a new collection featuring by the couture duo.
and Director Forty One Madison found the feel of the show this time to be one of good optimism: “There were defi nite signs during the Spring Tabletop Market that could be interpreted that business has improved. Retailers were placing orders, which say they need product and that they have confi dence in consumer spending for the 4th Quarter, 2010. Large buying groups were noticeably strong in attendance, as were many speciality stores from across the USA, Canada, Central and South America. Our read is that the mood is one of cautious optimism since there still are many factors and infl uences- both domestic and global - that can impact consumer spending in the coming months.”

introduction of an impressive nine new showrooms in the prestigious tabletop building. An achievement when you consider the tough trading conditions many companies are up against in the current climate. Laurie Burns commented: “I think it’s fair to say we are defi nitely seeing ‘the end of that thing called 2009!’ Retailers are looking to position themselves for the future and manufacturers are eager to provide their customers with what they want. It’s exciting to see really new products introduced this spring, versus just a new colour in a best seller. Our new tenants come to us from around the globe and bring a new vitality to the tableware marketplace.”
New showrooms to be seen were Auratic, Eisch USA, Formation Brands, Kinetic, Rogaska Crystal, Signature Housewares, SJM Home, Tervis Tumbler, and Zwilling J.A Henckels. Yasmain Bahadorzadeh, Co- Founder of Prouna USA told Tableware International: “We were very pleased with the April Tabletop show. The traffi c was great; we had a large number of serious buyers walking the aisles and visiting our showroom. The shift in the attitude of buyers towards new products and different pricing was very apparent, and unlike the October show it was very positive.”
Laura Simms, Communication and Marketing Director for L’Objet felt the buzz and enthusiasm from buyers present at the show. She said: “We had a fantastic show with incredible energy and enthusiasm. We launched a large array of products and had a great reaction from both retailers and press. The building was buzzing with tremendous activity and we felt it.” Making their debut in the building this time round was Eisch Glaskultur, who opened their fi rst US showroom at the market. “This is the fi rst of what we hope will be, several showrooms we open in the United States” says Alan Zalayet, Partner and President of Exports for Eisch, and Managing Director and CEO of Eisch USA. “Having a showroom provides us with an opportunity to highlight our exceptionally high-quality glassware to members of the restaurant and retailer trade. They can see and touch the pieces for themselves, before they commit to purchase.” Another fi rst time tenant with a very positive experience was Augarten USA. Andrea Hadek told us: “This was our premiere participation at 41 Madison. A one word description, - INCREDIBLE. We were happy to showcase the breath taking beauty, design diversity and quality of the exclusively European handmade and hand painted Augarten
