For a sustainable Mole Valley

Transition Bookham held it’s second meeting on 21st April. After briefly intro- ducing themselves, the

two dozen or so present held a lively discussion on possible initiatives.

Raising an awareness of what already exists was considered a priority, such as re-use or recycling via Freecycle, Freegle, LETS, St. Nicolas, etc.

It was agreed to plan a ‘swap’ event for September, with items taken to a venue, left at the kerbside (suitably labelled!) or listed on a noticeboard if requiring collection, e.g. timber.

whilst a full meeting was due on 26th May, so more next issue. Please try to attend the June one listed below.

Food production was a popular topic and the first food group meeting was subsequently announced for 19th

The Foodshare scheme is a national initiative that channels surplus food from gardeners, allotment holders and schools (including their Growing to Give project) to charities. St Peter's in Ashtead will be giving surplus food to support the Graham Peddies Leatherhead Pitstop Day Centre.

May,

Polesden Lacey are offering 5 familes a plot to grow fresh produce. Surplus will be used in the restaurant or sold in the farm shop. Call 01372 452048.

The Effingham Learning Partnership (ELP), a group made up of local schools, have created a sustainable

travel strategy. It aims to encourage initiatives such as Walk once a Week (WoW), walking buses, cycling, car sharing and park and stride, and will push for improvements in transport infrastructure. Its cycle training programme will improve upon that currently offered by Surrey County Council. It will be available for more age groups, with advanced courses, and will help foster a cycling culture.

For years our very own Green Granny has been running a food buying group. Now Transition Bookham have started another to share the task. Suma, a co-operative and the UK’s largest independent wholefood wholesaler, has kindly donated one of their jute bags to give away to the first person to contact us via our website.
