THE DEVIL INSIDE HIM
New Theatre, Cardiff. Tue 11 May
words BEN BRYANT
John Osborne’s Look Back In Anger was a landmark piece of theatre. Vitriolic and powerful, it launched the career of a playwright who often had an uneasy relationship with his audience and critics. This is exactly why The Devil In- side Him, which precededLook Back In Anger by a few years and was thought lost until 2008, has been causing such a stir.. The play follows the struggle of the sensitive, shy Huw Prosser as he grows up in a small Welsh town. Iwan Rheon’s take on Huw is feverish and enigmatic. He tumbles around the stage like a rabbit with myxamotosis, pupils like saucers, overwhelmed by everything around him. Still, even this startling turn can’t disguise a clumsy script. Huw has a tendency to eulogise at length on the beauty of nature and the fragility of life, and in the nasal whine adopted by Iwan, this veers hopelessly into self-parody, driving the audience to bursts of laughter.
The play is also indebted to a few of the conventions of the time. Stock characters such as the garrulous maidservant Mrs Evans (played brilliantly by Rachel Lumberg) crop up, and the latter half of the play is crowbarred awkwardly into a murder mystery format. And yet, for these faults, there is a lot to love about The Devil Inside Him. The staging is magnificent: it’s simple and atmospheric, with an inspired closing scene. There are some wonderful moments: Mr Gruffuyd’s powerful sermons, Mrs Prosser’s closing words, and the startling exchange between the stricken Dilys and the clueless Iwan. There’s no denying that The Devil Inside Him is flawed, but as a prelude to Osborne’s landmark play it is utterly compelling.
