STEFFAN RHODRI TO PRESENT WALES BOOK OF THE YEAR

YAEL BARTANA WINS ARTES MUNDI PRIZE

Yael Bartana has been announced as the winner of 2010’s Artes Mundi prize for her multimedia work focusing on the Israeli situation and the complexities within relationships with other countries and groups. Bartana, who lives between Israel and the Netherlands, works through film, installation, photography and sound. Much of her work has a staged feel, playing with rituals and the notion of return. Artes Mundi is Britain’s biggest contemporary arts prize and Bartana will receive £40,000. Judge, Professor Sarat Maharaj said that Bartana’s work “has continually found inventive strategies to question the abstract idea of a nation’s collective identity – a question that is fundamental to the human condition.” Work from all eight finalists in the competition, focusing on human life and interaction, has been in Artes Mundi 4 exhibition in the National Museum in Cardiff since March and will remain there until Sun 6 June.

BIKE WEEK ROLLS INTO TOWN

If there was ever a time to dust off your bicycle and don colourful summer clothes then Bike Week is it. Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity, are marking Bike Week 2010 in Cardiff with an event called Love Handles on Sun 27 June, celebrating all things summery, bike related and environmentally friendly. From 2pm the two wheeled fun starts at Milgi’s Northcote Lane Market on City Road, Cardiff for some vintage and crafty bargains. There is a short group bike ride leaving from Milgi at 6pm which goes to the city centre, along the Taff Trail, through Bute Park and Coopers Field, and finishes at Cardiff Arts Institute on Park Place where a carnival of circus performers, live music and comedy runs from 6pm until midnight. Everything is free with an optional £2 donation to Sustrans for those taking part in the bike ride. Let’s just hope it doesn’t rain.

DOCTOR WHO HITS THE

STAGE (NO MATT SMITH, SADLY)

There’ll be no sofas to hide behind when Doctor Who Live takes to the stage later in the year with a new, gripping storyline. The national tour lands in Cardiff on Thurs 28 Oct, running every night until a Halloween performance on Sun 31 Oct. Popular monsters from the television series will appear, including the Daleks and Cybermen, and the show promises to be every bit as epic as its television original with battles, special effects, pyrotechnics and a live 16-piece orchestra playing music by the programme’s long term composer, Murray Gold. Those hoping to get a glimpse of Matt Smith or Karen Gillian in the flesh will be disappointed, but the actors will film special scenes for screening as part of the shows, developed in association with Steven Moffat, executive producer of the television programme.
