“I am happy with the decision I made,” said the twenty seven year old. “I would do the same again if they asked me.”

And while Boaz may seem an unlikely name for a Welsh international, his other name is the more normal Glyn – so how did the names come about?

“It is a long story,” he explains. “When my parents were fi rst married they did a lot of travelling and when they were in Israel they met a boy called Boaz. It is a Hebrew name, and they liked it.

“They wanted to call me Boaz when I was born, but people said ‘you can`t call him that! It will haunt him for the rest of his life.’ So they called me Glyn, but ever since everyone has called me Boaz.

“It was tough as a young lad, there was no one else in any of the schools I went to called Boaz, that is for sure. The only time I get called Glyn these days is by the tax man or on a team sheet,” he jokes.

So, instead of playing for either of the nations involved in that World Cup opening match, the Hull stopper might just be watching one of his boyhood heroes wearing the number one jersey for England, David James.

“When I fi rst joined Aston Villa, David James was the fi rst team goalkeeper,” he said.

“I worked there with him as well as Mark Bosnich and Peter Enkleman. When David left Peter Schmeichel became the number one goalkeeper, so I had some good ones to watch.”

Myhill was born in the town of Modesto, seventeenth largest city in the State of California and the home of swimmer Mark Spitz, the winner of seven gold medals at the 1972 Olympic games in Munich.

The family moved to Chirk and then over the border to a little village called Weston Rhyn where he started to play football.

“I started off in mid-fi eld and I used to get the odd goal as well. One day I was asked to play in goal and I just enjoyed it. I liked all the extra kit, the gloves and all that, plus I was better than I was in midfi eld” said the 6ft 3in hulk, who then made it to the youth team at Aston Villa.

“I played for the England youth side in Germany, but then I was asked to play for Wales.”

Myhill was loaned out to Bradford, Macclesfi eld, and Stockport, until Hull City, then pushing for promotion from the old third division, paid £50,000 for his services.

It was a heady rise to the top fl ight of English football for the Yorkshire club, travelling through the leagues until promotion to the Premiership, for the fi rst time in the club’s history, came at the end of the 2007-8 season by way of the play offs.

“I signed for Hull in 2003 when we were in the bottom division. It was a great club for me to sign for at that stage of my career,” he said affectionately.

“I have grown with the way the club has progressed, and I want to continue to grow. We had an unbelievable start and

thankfully so because the second half of the season wasn`t so great, but we managed to survive.”

The invitation to play for Wales came about thanks to the former international goalkeeper Paul Jones. Jones was combining the role as Wales goalkeeper coach whilst still playing for Queens Park Rangers.

They played against Hull and he was impressed with the quality of the man at the other end of the pitch.

The name Glyn Myhill appeared on an international team sheet for the fi rst time away in Luxembourg and he came on as a substitute in the 2-0 victory.

“They asked me, and I am glad they asked me,” said Myhill. “I am thrilled, and I have really enjoyed my time.

“I would have liked to have played in more of the competitive matches, but that is the manager`s choice and we are all here to give him options. I have learnt a lot from watching the top goalies you see at international level.

“I think there are a lot of confi dent young lads in this current squad with a lot to prove in their careers, and that will work well for us. We are improving and some of the players not playing in the Premiership might be playing there in six months time.”

As for June 12th who will the Wales goalkeeper be rooting for, the country of his residency, or the country of his birth? Wisely, Glyn Boaz Myhill says he will be rooting for the game of football.
