TENOVUS CLIMB MOUNTAINS TO CONQUER CANCER

Hikers and fundraisers brave the ultimate in mountain climbing challenges in a bid to raise over £100,000 for Welsh cancer charity Tenovus.

Over 400 people from across Wales will be taking part in the Tenovus Three Peaks Challenge, scaling Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in June this year, to raise vital funds for the charity which provides support for people with cancer in the heart of their communities.

The winning team from the Three Peaks Challenge in 2009, ‘The 2009 Speed Demons’ made up of colleagues from City Legal and Parker and & CO

based in Newport, completed the challenge in 20 hours and 12 minutes.

Phill Barnett, aged 47 and Senior Partner in City Legal Commercial Lawyers, explains: “Together with Gary Parker, a good friend of mine, I did the Three Peaks Challenge in 2008. The problem was, both Gary and me were pretty unimpressed with both our team’s position and time.

“We thought about doing the Three Peaks again in 2009 and decided to put together a team who, while in it for fun and the general experience would have a genuine shot at winning and best of all, raise money for a fantastic cause.

“We entered in 2009, which also had added poignancy for me as it marked the 10th anniversary of the death of my father Michael at just 63 years old from oesophageal cancer. So I was absolutely determined to do as much as I could to raise money for Tenovus.”

CARDIFF CITY WIN LEGENDS EVENT

Former Cardiff City FC players came up trumps in a head to head collision against the Welsh Futsal Select team, in the fi rst ever Cardiff City Legends Futsal Match to support children‘s charity, Ty Hafan.

The big game at the @Futsal arena in Llanishen, Cardiff, saw former stars such as Jason Perry, Neal Ardley, Andy Legg, Martyn Margetson, and Scott Young showing their support for the charity by coming out to play the fastest growing indoor sport on the planet. Current stars Joe Ledley and Stephen McPhail were also present to watch the action. £1,000 was donated to Ty Hafan after the event.

The game ended 5-3 to the Cardiff City Legends. Their fate looked uncertain at the end of the fi rst half when the Welsh Futsal Select team was 2-0 up, but goals from Neal Ardley and Scott Young saw them triumph by full time.

The fun was rounded off with a £1,000 donation from @Futsal to Ty Hafan at the end of the night. Managing Director Frank Rodriguez, who presented the cheque, said:

“The Tenovus Three Peaks Challenge was launched in 2003 and has gained momentum to become a key event in the Tenovus fundraising calendar. To date over half a million pounds has been raised for Tenovus through the Three Peaks Challenge and more than 1,400 people have been involved as part of a walking team or support crew, not to mention the number of people and companies who have sponsored these teams and followed their progress.

“This year’s Three Peaks Challenge is guaranteed to be another fantastic event for both Tenovus and those that are taking part. We are looking for between 4-10 people to enter a team for this year’s challenge to help us raise our target of £100,000.

“The teams that enter are always in great spirits and the atmosphere is brilliant from start to fi nish, but more importantly the amount of money is crucial in helping Tenovus to continue to support cancer patients and their families in their communities, where they need it most. “

“Handing over that cheque and knowing it will make a difference was fantastic. Everyone at @Futsal thinks the world of Ty Hafan, and we’re delighted to have helped support such a worthy cause. It was great seeing how quickly the ex-Cardiff City players picked it up; it’s very similar to 11-a-side football with just a few modifi ed rules to suit the indoor format.”

Ex-Cardiff City player Andy Legg said: “It was a really fun event, we all enjoyed playing Futsal and knowing you’re supporting such an important charity is a good feeling.” Frank Ady, Head of Corporate Partnerships at Ty Hafan, added: “We were thrilled that @Futsal and Cardiff City chose Ty Hafan as their charity of choice.”
