PLANTING
[ Well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5-6.5 is preferred
[ Container-grown hibiscus should be transplanted to the yard during cooler months
[ For a hedge, plant hibiscus 3½ to 4’ apart, otherwise space plants 4½ to 5’ apart
OPTIMUM CLIMATE
According to the University of Florida Extension Service, Tropical Hibiscus flowers best in temperatures between 60-90˚. Plants in the ground may be killed by temperatures below 30˚, but established plants may come out in the spring and produce new growth by the summer. Hardy Hibiscus, a close relative of the tropical variety, is large flowered, fast growing (up to 15’ tall and 4-8’ wide) and more cold tolerant.
[ Protect the plants from cold northern winds with fencing, buildings, screens or trees
[ Not particularly tolerant of salt spray or saline irrigation water
[ A half a day of direct sunlight is generally the minimum required for optimum growth
WATERING
[ Hibiscus do not tolerate saturated soils or “wet feet”
[ Water daily in warmer weather, especially in periods of drought. In the winter, water only when the soil is dry to the touch
[ Organic mulch can conserve water, reduce weeds and control pests
FERTILIZING
[ Fertilize frequently but lightly (3-4 times/year): {1} Early spring {2} After the first growth flush {3} Midsummer {4} Early winter
[ Use high potassium fertilizer in the summer for optimum blooming
[ No fertilization necessary in winter months
[ Make sure you put the fertilizer out to the edges of the tree’s canopy to ensure nutrients reach the whole root system
PRUNING
[ Rejuvenates plant after winter. Spring pruning (February or March) can include dead or weak growth and is the only time the plant can be completely cut back
[ Can be lightly pruned in late summer or early fall, but no pruning during late fall and winter
[ Cut about 1 /3 of the way back just
above the nodes, leaving 2 to 3 nodes on branches for new growth
PESTS
[ Control with contact or systemic pesticides applied during the early morning hours (not the middle of a hot sunny day)
