Welcome Summer
We usher in the season with a feature on summer fashion that will ensure you’re stylishly chic for your next backyard soirée. Mara and Jose Hixon generously opened up their beautiful beachside home for this photo shoot featuring them, their children Izzy and Max, Sandra Dee Russell, Dr. Shea Ehret, Jeff Keels and Angel Colbourne modeling fashions from Kohl’s. Michael S. Bradley, Heather Spivey and Kaitlyn DeBikes from Imperial Salon did a wonderful job on hair and makeup while photographer Michael Giragosian and Art Director Jaclyn Steele worked their magic to bring it all together.
For those of use not lucky enough to have the Atlantic Ocean as our backyard, Editorial Assistant Rebecca Wood (with a little help from our Facebook Friends) has compiled a list of Brevard’s Best Beaches. June promises to be a busy month when some of my favorite people promise to dazzle you at the annual Dancing With Brevard competition (June 5) and Brevard’s newest Poshest Pet (and next month’s SpaceCoast Living cover) will be unveiled during a June 26 party at the home of Dr. Ruben and Rita Moreno and 2009 Poshest Pet Tess Moreno.
Traditionally we take the third Sunday of this month (this year it’s June 20) to pay tribute to that often-neglected family member – Dad. Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who was raised by her father, first proposed the concept of Father’s Day in 1909. But it wasn’t until 1966 that President Johnson signed a presidential proclamation recognizing Father’s Day. Considering a similar presidential act recognizing Mother’s Day took place in 1914, it was long overdue.
Erma Bombeck once wrote about fathers, “He opened the jar of pickles when no one else could… It was understood when it rained, he got the car and brought it around to the door. When anyone was sick, he went out to get the prescription filled. He took lots of pictures... but he was never in them.” That pretty much describes my dad and many others of his generation. Although the role of fathers has evolved over time, there will always be that traditional perception of dad taking care of things – because that’s what dads do.
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY to all the guys who get things done – that’s what you do and we love you for it.
My dad, Carl Weir, Jr. in one of those
rare instances when he was actually in
front of the camera. (I think I actually took this picture)
