The Importance of Linking Your Finacial Decisions with Your SDP
structures and ask whether you have the balance of finances correct for your preferred Education Delivery Model (EDM). The next step is to challenge whether the EDM is correct for your school and pupils. Every school or college will have very specific issues to which it must respond. Finance should not be used in such a way as to drive your establishment towards an inappropriate EDM. This process will help you to deliver to the Best Value agenda. Finally, trend analysis looks at the situation of your finances on a year- on-year basis. Schools are required to project their budget forward on a three-year rolling basis under FMSiS. By looking at trend analysis in this way you will begin to see how the finances are changing in their structure. Hopefully these will be in response to the positive
expert cannot be separated from what goes on in the classroom and his/her skills can indeed support your EDM. The skills of the school business manager need not necessarily be restricted to finance. For many, their responsibility also includes strategic and operational management of human resources, facilities, sustainability, marketing and communication. They are most effective where they are part of a school’s senior leadership team.
School business manager’s impact
In 2008, an Ofsted report found that those who manage school systems such as business and finance managers have an important impact on pupils’ achievement and the overall effectiveness of the school. One of the ways they do this is by taking over some of the financial leadership responsibilities from
Recent research carried out for the
NCSL showed that school business managers on average can secure over £30,000 per year for their school
steps you have taken to change the delivery education in your school. Trend analysis also acts as an early warning signal.
Distributed leadership supports the effective delivery of a SDP
Because of the increasingly complex nature of putting together a SDP, more and more schools are recognising the benefits of distributed leadership and particularly when it comes to linking finance to the School Development Plan. This is where a strong working relationship between a headteacher/ principal and senior support staff is essential. Strong leadership is recognising that you can’t do it on your own. You need the right people with you, working with them to make your organisation a success. In relation to the financial aspects of your SDP, this is where the expertise of a school business manager comes into its own. The role of the school business manager as finance
senior education leaders, freeing them to concentrate on their prime focus, the quality of teaching and learning. School business managers are able to focus their skills and talents on managing the school’s business needs. It’s about making the best use of the professionals available in your school or college and not about surrendering accountability.
Savings and additional funds
As schools face tougher pressures on their budgets, school business managers will play a yet more vital role as part of a school’s senior management team. Their skills allow them to identify and potentially recover significant amounts of money for their schools in efficiency savings, as well as attracting additional income. Recent research carried out for NCSL
showed that school business managers on average can secure over £30,000 per year for their school. In addition, when effectively deployed and operating at the
correct level, they can save headteachers up to one third of their time.
Pooling resources
Headteachers, particularly in smaller schools need to think about how they can access good quality business managers. More and more are employing school business managers as part of a collaborative cluster and NCSL are piloting 30 projects in different parts of the country to test the use of school business managers across more than one school.
