fishing and outdoor activity in the state. Two lakes, Kampeska and Pelican, are just a stone’s throw from anywhere in town and provide plenty of fishing, beaches, boating areas, and camping areas. The two S.D. Game, Fish & Parks facilities

here are not the largest in the state, but may offer some of the best-rounded facilities anywhere. The state park annual entry sticker or a daily park entry is required. Sandy Shores Recreation Area is on the
southwest side of Lake Kampeska. It features a public swimming beach, and first class boat launching ramps with a dock that provides easy lake access. It has 20 campsites (12 electrical and 8 non-electrical) on grass pads near the beach. A modern comfort station is part of the available facilities. Lake Pelican Recreation Area has two
camping cabins, 46 campsites, all electrical and six horse campsites, all electrical. A new comfort station is now available for campers and visitors. There is also a boat ramp and dock,
enclosed picnic shelter, swimming beach, groomed hiking trail, occasional weekend interpretive programs, archery range, a multi- purpose trail for hiking, horseback riding or bicycling, and junior naturalist programs in

f you live in Watertown, you know you don’t have to go far for some of the best
August — a naturalist is available for group programs if arrangements are made through the local GF&P office. Codington County operates Memorial Park on the northwest shore of Lake Kampeska. There are 90 pads with electricity and water.
Swimming, boat launch and concessions add to picnics for daytime use. The park also has camping areas available, both with and without water and electricity available. The large area of lakeshore also makes
hiking and nature walks after a family picnic a fun activity. Shoreline fishing is always popular and a
great way to spend a sunny afternoon. There are plenty of good shorelines at City Park, Jackson Park and Forsberg Park on Lake Kampeska. The Stokes-Thomas City Park is another
unique facility on Lake Kampeska. It’s a city park featuring a boat ramp and parking, bath house and swimming beach, sand volleyball areas, picnic shelters, rest rooms, a ball field and 72 camping pads all with electricity. There’s even a dump station for camper holding tanks. Stokes-Thomas is the easiest to find of the lake-oriented parks operated by city, county and state. It’s on the northeast shore of the lake on South Lake Drive just off S.D. Highway 20. Park hours are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily from May 1 to October 31.
