Lake Area Technical Institute is one of the best and most respected technical institutes in the
region. Located in northeast Watertown, the campus lies on 37 acres of land, which is home to seven buildings that are completely occupied with the latest technology. In 1965, the founding fathers of technical education in South Dakota voted unanimously to organize
the first technical school in Watertown, with others to follow in Mitchell, Sioux Falls and Rapid City. Beginning with one program of study and 16 students, Lake Area Tech has come a long way in a relatively short amount of time. Today, approximately 1500 full-time and part-time students attend classes in 25 programs of study. With a student teacher ratio of 16:1, students receive personal attention from experienced instructors. Students who attend Lake Area Tech earn a quality education, as proven by receiving the high-
ranking accreditation by The Higher Learning Commission, which is a member of the North Central Association. Many of the programs also have their own accreditation status. Over the previous years, Lake Area Tech has also received numerous state and national honors and has been recognized as a leader in their industry. Lake Area Tech understands that time and money are valuable. At Lake Area Tech students can
receive a degree or diploma in 9-22 months. The education students receive, by comparison to other post-high institutions, is affordable and there is no out-of-state tuition. Students who have previous college or high school classes may be given credit for these courses allowing students more time for their studies and the prospect of saving money on tuition. Whatever the field of study, students will gain practical hands-on knowledge that will give them
the competitive edge and “know-how” when they enter the job market. When students ask us, “What is the real world like?”, we show them. Employers locally, regionally and nationally, rely on Lake Area Tech to supply them with an individual who understands the technology and who can immediately go to work with their business without having to invest in additional training time. Lake Area Tech consistently places over 95% of its graduates in their training related field. Although Lake Area Tech has only been in existence since 1965, its presence has been made loud
and clear around the region. Alumni, current students, parents, and employers recognize the quality of craftsmanship. Lake Area Tech is seeing the rewards of first-generation students who are sending their children its way to benefit from an education that has paid off so well for them. And employers are encouraging career seekers to get their training at Lake Area Tech. The Lake Area Tech legacy continues to grow as outstanding alumni are returning to teach, serve on advisory boards, become involved with the Alumni Association and Foundation, and are employed as staff and administrators.
