In an exhausting two weeks of tennis, and only three matches remaining, the Lady Broncos have positioned themselves to earn one of eight playoff spots in NHIAA Class L playoffs. On Monday, May 10, Alvirne lost, 5-4, to Londonderry. Strong victories in fourth, fifth, and sixth singles and third doubles gave the Broncos their only points on the afternoon. Kate Martin, Yashaswani Mopharti, and Lahari Venuthurupalli all won their matches, and Mopharti and Venuthurupalli won at third doubles. “It was a disappointing loss, but the girls played aggressive,

even with the match on the line,” commented Coach Dave Lelesi. On Tuesday, May 11, the Lady Broncos took a difficult, 7-2 loss to Manchester Central, with Venuthurupalli and Gina Lupoli picking up the only two victories for Alvirne. Coach Lelesi continues to feel that “we are improving, but still need to work on our doubles.” Alvirne picked up its only victory of the week on Thursday with a 6-3 win against Spaulding. Deanna Trearchis and Nicole Wilcox each won in singles and doubles, and Kate Martin won in her singles match. Venuthurupalli won her singles match in a 15-13 tiebreaker “showing some incredible mental toughness,” said Coach Lelesi. “The team showed that they had grown by playing some of the best teams in the state over the last two weeks,” explained Lelesi. The Lady Broncos have three matches remaining this week before determining if their season will continue into the playoffs.

Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. to Compete in ACT Late Model Tour

submitted by Travis Barrett

Hudson’s Joey Polewarczyk, Jr., (Pole’s

Automotive/NH Precision No. 97 Ford) will try and earn Ford Racing its first ACT Late Model Tour victory when he opens the 2010 season with the NH Governor’s Cup 150 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee on Sunday, April 18, at 1:15 p.m. Polewarczyk enters his sixth season with ACT and has four career wins, including two at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, ME, and he has finished inside the top five in nine of his last 24 starts. The 2008 winner of the NH Governor’s Cup 150 at Lee, Polewarczyk finished second in the event last year. According to Polewarczyk, last season brought team so much closer together. “We had our struggles in the middle of the year, but we fought through it as a team and got that much better. to be a good year.”

It’s going “Our hope is to go out and win that

race. Lee’s always been strong for us. It’s always been great to start the season at Lee, because I basically grew up racing there. My dad raced there when Wayne Helliwell was driving for him, and it’s where I started racing. I can’t wait,” he continued. Polewarczyk hasn’t finished worse than second place during his last two trips to Lee. When asked what the key to his success was, he responded, “The pavement isn’t the greatest. There’s just not a lot of grip. If you can get the car to drive off the corner without sliding the tires, you’re going to have a good day. You’ll be able to pass people if you’re not sliding around.” “You really want to save your stuff as

much as you can so that you’ll have some drive off the corner toward the end of the race. Do that, and you’ll be in good shape at the end,” he continued. Polewarczyk commented that his

test last weekend at White Mountain Motorsports Park went really well. “We basically just wanted to go out and feel out the motor and check everything for leaks and all of that kind of stuff—just kind of get used to the difference with the new Ford motor. I was really pleased with the way the Ford went.” When asked what he noticed about the

Ford Crate Engine in testing, Polewarczyk said, “When you’re in the middle of the corner, and you get on the throttle—the Chevy puts all its power down right when you get on it. But [with] the Ford motor, you hit the throttle and it’s a gradual pull all the way through the straightaway.

It

just has a different power band.” “It sounds different and it feels different. I’m really excited about the Ford and it would be awesome to get a win for those guys this weekend,” he concluded.

eighth with an all-around score of 36.450. She received a 9.35 on vault (fourth), 9.45 on bars (eighth), 9.05 on beam (fourth), and 8.6 on floor (ninth). Prep-Op Intermediate Jr. Division: Kaleigh Whitnell of

Litchfield finished with an all-around score of 32.000. She received an 8.25 on vault, 8.6 on bars (10th), 6.6 on beam, and 8.55 on floor (ninth).

Prep-Op Intermediate Senior Division: Jessica Wambsganss of Hudson finished with an all-around score of 25.300. She received an 8.1 on vault, 9.05 on bars (fourth), and 8.15 on beam (seventh).
