natural surroundings and the proximity puts you a stones throw away from boat rentals, good food, and amenities. You can take a day hike to Matheson Lake, west along the Galloping Goose trail, to the Kapoor Park Reserve, or head east on the trail and hike out to Royal Roads University and enjoy some of the unique island life the area has to offer.

If relaxing and seeing the sights is what you're after, the sightseeing tours take in the dramatic seascapes and rocky vistas, killer whales, bald eagles, otters, porpoises and colonies of huge sea lions in their natural habit. For photographers, opportunities abound. No two days will ever be alike.

Depending on your level of seamanship, you can rent a boat on your own or hire a charter to fish the Strait of Juan de Fuca and explore pristine coastal Vancouver Island. Your hosts at Pedder Bay are notorious for providing anglers with the finest saltwater fishing adventures in the province of British Columbia.

If fishing is your game, you can follow The Word on the Dock, an online fishing journal with loads of information to get you headed in the right direction. The Word on the Doc includes the latest fishing hot spots, tackle tips and more.

Rental boats include 16' fibreglass Hourston Runabouts, amply equipped with 40 hp, 4-stroke motors; electric start, ½ canvas top, windshield, on-board steering and controls, emergency kit, paddles, and gear.

The 16' fibreglass Double Eagle Runabouts can fit up to six people comfortably. These ships come equipped with 50 hp, 4-stroke electric start, motors,

and the same available gear as its cousin, the Hourston Runabout.

Tackle box, rod and reel rental is available for a paltry $12.00 per trip, with down- riggers an additional $10.00.

Local guides say that the salmon fishing has been great all this winter season. Now that spring is here they are still seeing great results. Chinook salmon are still being brought in on spoons, anchovies and green hootchies, and weighing up to the mid-teens. Experts advise that when you're trolling, keep the speed up near coho fishing speed and keep the leaders from you flasher to your terminal gear short. You are fishing for the “teenagers” here, they like things fast and exciting.

Fishing for halibut has also been very productive. There are no real secrets what to use. Both bait and jigs seem to work equally well. With halibut, it's more about location. It's more about hunting your quarry - reading the currents, looking for external cues, looking at the sounder for tell-tale structures - than salmon fishing is. Study your charts, use a GPS and a fish finder to your advantage and you will succeed. ◊
