and attract local and national capital.
“Technological commercialization is going to become more
(important) to us. Smaller firms are generating new products and new services, but they need the assistance that TRDA can lend. And much of this is virtual. Not all (work) has to take place at a given location,” Straub said. Energy-wise, TRDA manages grant programs and provides
support to small businesses, the results of which include commercialization of new technologies, clean and efficient energy generation and energy savings, in addition to creation of high paying jobs and stimulation of small business growth. The organization now is involved in developing alternative fuel infrastructure projects and, according to Straub, its initiatives may last years. So may its science, technology, engineering and math-based
(STEM) programs. These provide technological training to educators through Teacher Quest, a multi-week, paid summer- based program in which teachers work at select science and technology based businesses and the Endeavour Academy. This environment offers diverse, interactive workshops in which kindergarten through 12th
grade teachers receive customized
training sessions in science, technology, engineering, math and content-based reading. It all has proven highly effective and is expected to be even
more so with the economy being what it is and the federal manned space program drawing to a close, if only temporarily.
The Silver Lining
“We’re actually anticipating a ramp-up in demand for our
services, and so we have been having workshops for entrepre- neurs with regard to accessing federal research and development funds. People in this area are so well-versed in taking technology and making something of it, and that’s what many of them intend to do,” Straub said. That is precisely what Krause has done. Having patented its Clarujust technology, Audigence has
entered into a partnership with the University of Florida in which its School of Medicine, department of Communication Science and Disorders and department of Communicative Disorders are involved. They have made available laboratory facilities and allow Audigence to use the university’s existing industry contacts to assist in marketing and distribution. The company and university also have a jointly held patent. Audigence remains in the TRDA facility, if only for
the moment. “We’re on the verge of huge success. We’re commercially
selling the product today, having taken this product from conception to practice… Five years from now, what we’re doing at Audigence will become the standard (in tuning and testing audio devices), Krause said. “But it is like a lot of ideas: it could have just stayed on the shelf if we hadn’t gotten good advice, and that’s probably the most important thing TRDA brings to the table. We’re really grateful to TRDA for all that good advice.” u
