electronically within the logistics environment. They can access Transwide via the web or get connected electronically (B2B); so one of the key benefits we bring to the table is our capability to manage this interface. And because of our technology and our single- instance architecture some carriers are comfortable in using our system to manage their online communications with their entire customer portfolio; with all the delivery and transportation information flowing via Transwide in a fast and efficient manner between the shipper, customer and carrier.

“So our ability to interface in such a seamless manner is certainly one of our core USPs. Also we are able to manage ‘events’. We are web-based and are on-line in real time, so anybody using Transwide can trigger alerts and be much more reactive in its day-to-day operational logistics operations. So you can manage all your exceptions more efficiently in your process rather than wait for something to go wrong before having the inconvenience of having to fix a costly problem at that later stage. Also, with Transwide, our customers can manage the assignment of carriers to transport order, time slot, date and location, and can set their own rules within the system.”

Indeed, to further enhance this level of customisability, Transwide added the new twSelect (Dynamic Carrier Allocation) functionality during 2009, which adds one more value creating tool to its existing suite of Transport Execution Solutions. It plugs in to the existing twCall-off module, the Transwide Transport Order communication tool, which electronically creates, sends, receives and confirms transport orders between shippers and logistics providers. twSelect builds more flexibility and more automation into shippers’ Transport Order communication processes by deciding to which carriers the Transport Order has to be communicated. twSelect bases its allocation of Transport Order on criteria such as cost, proven quality of service, suitability for certain routes or additional service capability.

Ranked for suitability

For each routes every logistic provider is ranked for suitability according to a set of constrains. As soon as an applicable transport order becomes available it is automatically sent to the ‘preferred’ carrier. Then, if the selected carrier declines the order – for example, due to lack of capacity within the required timeline – then a cascade of the shipper’s other ranked carriers are contacted in sequence by twSelect. Once a carrier has

accepted the order, Transwide individually informs other parties that a carrier has been found. On more difficult routes or urgent shipments, it is also possible to use twSelect to broadcast simultaneously (one-to-all) a Transport Order to a selection of carriers. The fastest to accept is selected while the others receive the information that a carrier has been found. “Transwide is all about making life as painless for the shipper and carrier as possible,” concluded Maquignon. 
