Soule

submitted by Soule School

The children in second grade at the Dr. Soule

School have a lot of learning going on during the month of May! We have been discovering amazing facts about dinosaurs and fossils. Using a variety of non-fiction materials in our study, the children have become familiar with features such as maps, captions, types of print, tables of contents, and indexes. A home project to showcase our learning about dinosaurs is due on May 28. Our field trip to the Children’s Museum in Dover will be a hands-on experience to put us back in pre-historic times with our own archaeological dig. Grade two is fortunate to be having a guest speaker from the Weathervane Restaurant who will teach us about the parts and lives of lobsters. This annual visit is a wonderful opportunity to interact with these fascinating crustaceans! May is a month to remember the men and

women who devoted their lives to our country. At the Dr. Soule Memorial Day program, the children will be reciting a poem and singing a song about the American flag. We also study the history and symbolism of the flag, as well as the importance of respecting and caring for it properly. As the year draws to a close, and we anticipate special times together such as Field Day and End of Year Assemblies, we would like to thank all the families of grade two for your support for a wonderful year.

May is blooming with surprises! This week, the

first graders are working hard at creating special, personalized gifts for their Moms. Get prepared to see “the beauty.” We will begin a unit on Rocks and Minerals.

This will include exploring, classifying properties, and experimenting with rock samples from our playground, along with samples from outside of school. For homework, the children are asked to bring in 12 rocks in a container for Monday, May 10. The children are excited to learn more about our Earth!

In Math, we are working on counting coin combinations, knowing addition and subtraction math facts automatically, and studying fractions. Please remember to practice these skills at home. At the end of the month, the children will sing at our annual Memorial Day assembly. This event honors all veterans. Special dedications recognize our Soule families. We expect that you will be pleasantly delighted to see the culmination of the children’s literacy efforts in first grade. Dates are to be determined when these class events will happen. Both Mrs. Farnsworth and Mrs. Buck will host an Authors’ Celebration.

The fifth graders at the Barron School have returned to

school from their April vacation excited and ready to learn! There is much schoolwork to complete these next few months, and the students are all working hard to prepare for middle school. The student’s recent studies of U.S. history have taken them through the Revolutionary War. The fifth graders have found this time period very interesting and have learned much about the events leading up to the war. Be sure to ask your child about the French and Indian War, the various taxes, the Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere’s Ride, as well as many details about the war itself. The fifth grade field trip this month will be traveling to the Minuteman National Park in Concord, MA, and the Concord Bridge to see where Paul Revere rode and where the second battle of the war took place.
