Built on Family Tradition and Family Values
by Doug Robinson
Quoted as being “An American Cult Classic right up there with baseball and apple pie” by the famous Zagat restaurant guide, and having received numerous awards for excellence, including “Best Seafood in America” by Forbes Magazine, the Woodman’s of Essex, MA, and now of Litchfield, remain a humble, hard-working American family. “We recognize that our success is based on generations of hard work mixed with a few strokes of genuine luck,” says Rhonda Woodman. That being said, the Woodman’s are proud of their fifth-generation restaurant and clambake catering business, whose success is built from a foundation of Core Values: Serve only the best food with genuine and caring service, treat your staff with appreciation and respect, honor your family, and give back to the community you are a part of. “Simple values – easy to say, but not as easy to achieve – however, they guide us and we know what we are trying to do. And when we fall short – which we can at times – we make it right. It all boils down to two words—We Care,” says Rhonda. Having stood the test of time – this year marks their 96th year in business – their roadmap for success will guide the new restaurant in its second season, located at Mel’s Funway Park in Litchfield, as well. “We have over 32 family members currently working in our family business, and this year marks our 96th year in business,” shares Rhonda, with an obvious sense of family pride. “We were delighted when our
youngest son, Stephen, agreed to move up to New Hampshire and

oversee our first-ever expansion. He had much support from the troops back home, with our nieces, Vanessa Woodman and Tracey Carlson, eventually joining him mid-season. This year, Tracey is staying on as the co-manager and together, she and Stephen make a dynamic team.” Stephen, 25, and on hiatus before grad school, oversees the staff, while Tracey concentrates on the finances and inventory, with both sharing lots of overlap. “We have around three dozen employees who worked with us last year, and I am really happy to say that all but a couple are returning for our second season. They’re all from Litchfield, Hudson, and Manchester, and I believe they get what Woodman’s is about already. They are constantly exchanging thoughts, concerns, and ideas to help make us a better restaurant, and even started their own Woodman’s of Litchfield Facebook page. Back home, we have employees who’ve worked with our family for over 35 years. We love what we have going here already, and its been a lot of fun being in Litchfield.” Woodman’s Seafood and Grille opened last spring, and is currently open for their second season, lasting April through the end of October. “We learned a lot last year and we intend to keep improving our restaurant for our customers,” commented Tracey. “Last year, we had a bit of a learning curve, and from those experiences, we are positioned to improve.” They have added an improved air-conditioning unit, doubled the size of their seating with a new, tented outdoor seating area, and expanded both the restaurant and bar menus. Last year, lobsters and steamers were not on the menu often, but this year, they will be available on most summer weekends—just call ahead to ask. They are also ready to expand their famous Clambake and BBQ Catering across New Hampshire. Last year’s focus was mainly on the events catered for Mel’s Funway Park at their beautiful picnic area. This year, they are prepared to offer their famous Clambakes and BBQs to the backyards, lakefronts, and corporate offices of New Hampshire. “Our motto is “We Come to You and Cook”—pretty simple, and we like to keep it that way for our clients,” says Rhonda. “Some of our more well-known patrons are MIT, Harvard, and Massachusetts General Hospital, yet we service hundreds of small companies, as well as family events across New England. People call us because they want peace of mind—they know we’re the best and they can rest in that and not have to worry. It feels great to be a part of so many people’s special memories.” A lot has changed for the

Woodman’s over these last 96 years, and a lot has not. Today, 90 years and five generations later, the Woodman family is synonymous with traditional New England seafood at its best. Numerous awards and articles from lofty publications such as Boston Magazine, the
Improper Bostonian, Yankee Magazine, the New York Times,
Forbes, and so many more keep the Woodman family working hard at deserving their reputation. “We have a lot to live up to,” say Stephen and Tracey. “You can’t sit on your laurels—you have to prove yourself every day.” With a listing in the book
1,000 Places to See Before You
Die and the recent filming of a scene in Grown Ups, a new Adam Sandler movie opening in June (how’s that for a New Hampshire connection?), the Woodman’s remind themselves every year of what success is really about with their annual Fourth of July T-shirt, whose back bears this quote from Abraham Lincoln: “I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him.” And that is what the Woodman’s continue to do. Woodman’s of Essex in
