Gottwald releases “hybrid” results

Gottwald has reported that the hybrid drive technology available with its mo- bile harbour cranes has been shown to achieve fuel savings in the double-digit percentage range. As previously reported, the technol-

ogy uses the latest diesel generators in connection with dynamic brake resistors and short-term energy storage. Comprehensive tests, says Gottwald,

were carried out with a diesel-electric Model 6 crane. The result, says Gottwald, is that it

can improve the efficiency of mobile har- bour cranes that cannot be hooked up to an external power supply due to the quay infrastructure. So terminal opera- tors can still sustainably reduce fuel con- sumption, fuel costs and exhaust gas emissions and, by the same token, they can put themselves in a strong position when it comes to negotiating terminal concessions, as they can demonstrate “clean” operations. For some time it has been possible, if

a crane uses electric drive technology, to return the energy recovered from its de- celeration motions to its internal power system. However, sometimes there is no demand to feed it back to the grid and the excess energy is dissipated in brake resistors (converted to heat). Previously resistors could be switched only in rela- tively large steps, but now dynamic brake resistors can be used to improve energy rating considerably. The Gottwald hybrid drive includes

short-term energy storage for the recov- ered energy that is then made available for the next work cycle. Gottwald has performed tests on mechanical, electrochemical and electrostatic short- term storage systems and has found that, for typical MHC operations, the key re- quirements are met by electrostatic wear and friction free double-layer capacitors

Dana, Bosch Rexroth off- road deal

Dana Holding Corporation in the US and Bosch Rexroth AG in Germany have signed a memorandum of understand- ing (MoU) to form a 50:50 joint ven- ture to co-develop and manufacture ad- vanced drive transmissions for the off- highway market. The planned joint venture company,

which is expected to be based in Arco, Italy, will engineer, manufacture, and market hydro-mechanical variable powersplit transmission systems (HVT) for global off-highway markets. Both par- ties will contribute staff, intellectual property and capital. The new company will benefit from

Dana’s expertise in off-highway transmis- sion engineering and manufacturing, and Bosch Rexroth’s expertise in hydraulics and systems, said the parties in a joint statement.

Separately, Dana has introduced a new

driveline for ic-powered 9-10t FLTs, fea- turing a Spicer TE-08 powershift trans- mission, the new Spicer model 139 axle and a Spicer Wing Series 6C driveshaft. The system builds on the popularity

of the drivetrain introduced three years ago for 5-7t FLTs. Suitable for FLTs with pneumatic or cushion tyres, the model 139 axle is designed to offer the same durability and reliability as the 137/138 models already used on smaller FLTs. The new axle includes integral frame

and mast-mounting provisions for fixed mast lift truck applications. Its spiral bevel centre section and 6:1 planetary ratio generate 13:1-17:1 overall axle ratios. The planetary design allows for a

small ring gear, enabling the mast to be located as close as possible to the axle centre line, to minimise lost load centre. Integrated outboard wet disc brakes are fitted, along with a self-adjusting service brake system that minimises hydraulic actuation oil displacement requirements.

(ultracaps) with typical charge and dis- charge times of no more than 30 secs and with a service life of 1M cycles. All the energy is stored as electricity, which provides a high degree of efficiency. The test crane, a G HMK 6407, is

used for handling empty and full con- tainers and fruit pallets for around 4000 hours per year. It has a maximum capac- ity of 100t, hoisting speeds of up to 90 m/min and an installed diesel engine power of 895 kW. During the test phase, which imme-

diately followed the upgrade of the crane to dynamic brake resistors and installa- tion of the new ultracaps, double-digit

percentage fuel savings were achieved. At the same time, the quieter running char- acteristics of the diesel engine resulted in reduced noise emissions. As well as fitting new cranes, Gottwald

will be offering retrofit upgrades to envi- ronmentally friendly, cost cutting dynamic brake resistors and hybrid drives. It says the new drive technology is for applica- tions such as intensive container handling and professional bulk handling, where they are configured as 4-rope grab ma- chines, equipped with two hoists and fre- quently work 6000 hours/year. In the medium term it also plans to downsize its on-board diesel engines to

achieve even higher economical and eco- logical savings. ● Gottwald has received an order from Norway’s NorSea Group for a model G HMK 4406 for use in the Finnish Port of Hanko handling pipeline sections for the Nord Stream gas pipeline in the Baltic. A total of 40,000 pipe sections will be han- dled at Hanko and the new crane will han- dle them between the quayside and the laying barge supply vessels. The G HMK 4406 is a “100t class” crane that can handle loads of up to 57t across a wide radius. The 57t in this case is calculated as the weights of 2 x 23t pipe sections plus a special-pur- pose pipe spreader.
