Volcanic ash halts retail congress
The volcanic ash cloud that caused widespread disruption to air travel to and from the UK has caused the World Retail Congress to be postponed. The international chaos caused by the ash cloud made it difficult for many of the speakers and attendees to travel to Berlin, where the event was scheduled to take place on April 21 and 22. The
Congress has now been rescheduled for October 25 - 27 this year. Organiser Emap Communications says that it remains optimistic that most par- ticipants will be able to make the new dates. All delegates registered for the April dates will remain registered for the October event and confirmation of registration will be sent promptly.

Iconic pottery manufacturer Emma Bridgewater is to cele- brate its 25th anniversary this summer. A commemorative exhi- bition is planned to be held at the Potteries Museum in Stoke on Trent, where the company is based. The brand is also offering consumers the opportunity to re- turn any chipped or damaged Emma Bridgewater pottery and receive a 10 per cent discount on all like-for-like purchases. A number of housewares sup- pliers have received awards from The Direct Company at its Away Day held in April. The buying group’s annual event saw six companies receive awards recog-

nising their excellence. The award for Direct Diamond Supplier of the Year went to Dexam. Best Turnover Growth was won by Rayware and Most Promising Newcomer was awarded to EPE International. Zwilling JA Henckels won the award for Best Marketing. Cutlery manufacturer Robert
Welch has been awarded a Red Dot design award for its Bud range of cutlery. The internation- al design competition is one of the most difficult worldwide and tests products on ergonomics, functionality, clarity of function, innovation and ecological com- patibility. Managing director,
Rupert Welch commented on the success: “We feel that Bud greatly exceeds the expectations of the original design brief and are very pleased that this has been recognised by the Red Dot international design jury.” Lesley Ballantyne has been ap- pointed as the new Director of Operational Development for John Lewis. She will take respon- sibility for the brand’s customer service proposition as well as all aspects of operational support to its portfolio of stores. Ballantyne will report to Board Director Andrew Murphy, who is respon- sible for Retail Operations. She will take up the position from April 26th, from her existing role as managing director of John Lewis Glasgow.
Autumn Fair Accessories expands
Accessories is the name of the game for Autumn Fair. After an exceptional 2009 edition of the show which saw more than 10,500 accessories buyers flock to source products, Emap Connect has revealed plans to invest in the Accessories section of the show. In 2010’s edition, Hall 4 will host a new Catwalk Cafe which will focus on market-defining new trends for design and fash- ion-focused buyers. The new
addition to the show follows in the footsteps of the Pandora Catwalk Cafe for the Jewellery Show at Spring Fair, both being organised by Rah Productions. It will cover the entire spectrum of fashion accessories. The Catwalk Cafe will be surrounded by accessories exhibitors, making it easy to navigate for visitors. Event director Julie Driscoll commented: “The growth in fashion accessories at Spring
Fair International and in the market generally has led us to launch the Accessories at Autumn feature. Our fashion accessories and handbag ex- hibitors had a phenomenal Spring Fair and are clamouring for us to help them grow this thriving market at Autumn”. She continues, “Our ambition across the two seasons at Autumn and Spring is to build Europe’s largest fashion acces- sories offering.”
