Pelkey’s PA Racketeers Look to Take That Last Big Step

The Pinkerton Academy

boys’ tennis team fell just one victory short of the first state championship in its program’s history last spring.

Coach John Pelkey’s

crew had to settle for the fourth runner-up finish in the 29-year history of the program thanks to a 3-6, title-round loss at the hands of the Class L state champs

from Exeter High School. But the bulk of the talent

is back from that skilled Pinkerton squad in 2010, including four of the six players from the contin- gent’s singles ladder.

Number one singles player Mark Mangini has graduated, but number two man Sam Eaton - who post- ed a 14-3 record during the fine 2009 season - has bumped up into Mangini’s slot.

The other three returning

singles starters are also sen- iors, and they include Danny Kish at number two (13-3 last spring), Mike Soltys at number three (11-6 last year), and Tyler Angle at number four (13-4 last spring). A strong crew of five more seniors - Justin Maryea, Rob Giles, Kevin Konstant, Joon-Ho Lee, and Kellen Busby - has been bat- tling it out to claim the other two singles positions and perhaps doubles spots, and

promising newcomers Pat- rick Kane (a junior) and Patrick Maryea and Alex Roman (both sophomores) have also worked diligently to slip into the mix. Coach Pelkey has stated

that his primary key to hav- ing a successful 2010 season is “Staying healthy,” and the opponents that concern him the most are the squads from Exeter, Bishop Guertin of Nashua, Goffstown, Man- chester Central, and Lon- donderry.

There’s unquestionably talent on the Pinkerton Academy girls’tennis team’s present roster as it comes off a 12-3 season in 2009 and looks to battle the best again in Class L in 2010.

But depth and leadership are both areas coach Gerry Rosado has on his mind as his Lady Astros look to be a competitive crew this spring. Junior Summer Burns

will move up from the sec- ond singles spot to the first, and her ability to lead is one of the things upon which coach Rosado has his eye firmly focused.

“Summer Burns needs to

take a leadership role as cap- tain and maintain her steady play,” said the coach. “Team chemistry is also a key, and we need to find strong dou- bles pairings and stay healthy.”

Senior Ruth DiTulio

moves up from the third sin- gles spot to the second, soph- omore Casey Gilman has bumped up from number four to three on the singles ladder, and Maggie Preece has gone from number six singles to number four. Neither junior Julie

Accardo nor senior Lee Demeo were among the top six singles players for the PA varsity last spring, but they’re there this spring. And the team’s promising new- comers include 2009 Junior

Varsity Coaches’ Award winner and sophomore Elizabeth Rialdi and senior Melissa D’Angelo. When asked what teams

in Class L cause him the most concern, coach Rosado listed Manchester Central, Bishop Guertin of Nashua, Exeter, and Salem.

Skilled sophomore Casey Gilman has moved into one of the Pinkerton girls’ tennis contingent’s top three sin- gles spots this spring.
