Senior midfielder Kacie Connal scored four goals and assisted on two others and senior attack Kelcey Grady scored three times as the Pinkerton girls’ lacrosse squad kicked off its 2010 campaign with a hard fought, 9-6 edging of the Concord High Crimson Tide at PA this past Monday evening. The Lady Astros, who made it all the way to the Division I championship match last spring but fell to the Londonderry High Lady Lancers in that big contest, were up by a 6-3 count on Concord at halftime. But the Tide trimmed its deficit down to a single goal with 13:17 left in the contest,

and there were distinct rea- sons for anxiety on the Pinkerton sideline. Then Pinkerton potted

the final two tallies of the game to win going away. “I saw some good

things,” said PA coach Bryon Murphy. “I saw some things that are very encouraging. I’d like to see more consistency in our play, but it’s still really early.”

The Lady Astros netted

the first four goals of the match in the first seven minutes of play, and it looked as though a season- opening blowout might just be in the offing for hosts.

the

Grady netted the first goal of the night just 3:54 after the opening faceoff after receiving a pass from

Connal. Cori Rees then made it a

2-0 game just 19 seconds later, with the assist going to Rory Fawcett.

And

Connal bumped the PA lead up to 3-0 with less than five minutes gone in the game after taking a pass from Amy Hanlon. The Pinkerton advan-

tage grew to 4-0 exactly two minutes after that when Kristen Wolenski potted an unassisted marker. Concord finally put a goal up on the scoreboard with 13:52 remaining in the half, but the Lady Astros answered a minute later with another Connal tally (assist to Fawcett) to make the score 5-1. The Tide then sliced the

PA advantage down to 5-3 with back to back goals a

minute apart (with 3:08 left and 2:09 left), but the hosts got the final word in the first half when Connal net- ted her third tally of the half on a direct shot with just 30 seconds left to go. However, things got a tad stressful for Pinkerton during the first 12 minutes of the second half as Concord scored three of the first four goals that were scored to make it a 7-6 con- test.

But coach Murphy’s

mob finished up strong with scores from Connal (assist to Fawcett) with 12:44 left, and from Grady with 4:14 showing on the game clock. Rory Fawcett finished the contest with three assists for the victors, who will face Londonderry in Derry this Friday at 5 p.m.
