Yesterday’s Steps Taken to Today’s America
This should inform Mike Glander
what progressive thought has done for the working people of America. And I must point out the serious hypocrisy displayed by Bill Weimar, who denies hate talk by the Tea Party and then refers to our leaders in Washington as “the intimidating thugocracy that supports the White House today.” Sir, I and my fellow supporters of the White House are not thugs. Life in America described below may be just a dim memory for most; but those of us who actually lived at the time are eternally grateful for the growth and changes affected as a result of liberal and progressive thought. Each step was made difficult by those who would preserve the old ways. Jim Crow laws reigned in the South, and the Ku Klux Klan provided a perverse brand of law and order. To be elderly was to be dirt-poor, dependent, and often discarded. Children below the age of 16 worked in the mines and mills, and education was available only to the privileged. If one was lucky enough to have a job, six days comprised a work week; vacation, health, and retirement benefits were non-existent; and safety regulations were absent in dangerous workplaces. The abject poverty that existed in rural America was more typical of a Third World nation than a nation that abounded in the gifts of nature, but was so blindly conservative. Locally, the Merrimack River was an open sewer and a depository for cloth dyes that gushed from the mills. During the summer, a sickening odor from the paper mill constantly wafted through the windows of the Lawrence General Hospital. Youngstown, OH, and Pittsburgh, PA, were covered with soot from steel mills. The EPA was just a distant dream. We prayed in school, but religious and ethnic hatred permeated the social structure in America. Religious and charitable institutions provided some succor to the destitute, but were merely band-aid solutions. Having received the right to vote as recently as 1920, women were treated as inferior to men and often
had to put themselves at the mercy of a back alley butcher to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. Equal pay for equal work was unheard of. Admittedly, some social programs have failed to achieve their objectives, but one cannot deny the growth and changes for the better that have been wrought by progressive political thought and the fulfillment of the ideals expressed in both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. After over 200 years, the principles established by the Founding Fathers are gradually coming to fruition. Each step forward has been attained by the blood, sweat, and tears of forward- looking leaders who had to fight the forces of the status quo, which begs the question: Which of the past conditions would conservatives like to return to?

Obama’s Selected Laws
This president’s most recent graft is
the lack of enforcement of immigration laws or even offering to solve the flood of immigrants into states like California and Arizona. Instead of enforcing laws against illegal immigration, he encourages a boycott of the state of Arizona. His lack of patriotic will to enforce the laws to protect law-abiding citizens is an outrage to the American people and this country. With over 400,000 illegals that have crossed the borders from Mexico, it was very constitutional for Arizona to protect the people of that state. Obama’s world is nothing more than political fancy and a grab for voters in the future in Arizona, even if he destroys the state. While dismissing legal residents in Arizona and playing to these illegal people as our country faces more illegal immigration, 18 million illegals want a free ride without paying and waiting, as most in the past have complied with the laws of immigration, including several true American Irish and English immigrants in my own family in the 1920s. This extreme liberal, socialist, progressive president is bent on the
destruction of the constitution and this country with lack of enforcement of the laws. The attacks with the heavy hand in forcing federal laws we do not want or need without safeguards for the American people. Such attacks as healthcare reform, forcing all to pay fines (if you are found not to have insurance and fraud in Medicare); and the student loan program (increasing defaults on all taxpayers to pay) will be paid by the government. Constant attacks on the second amendment over gun control in the hands of rightful citizens. Sure looks like it is needed in Chicago, Mr. President (The criminals have the guns; they did not get them legally); you are to the point that you need to bring the federal troops to control Chicago because of your liberal, progressive, permissive laws that you helped enact while a Senator in Chicago, your home away from home, the town of Chicago. An example of your future Socialist society! The big lie about global warming (will cost billions more to satisfy the greed of your local and federal Democrats), overkill in financial stock markets for Obama’s group not to protect us, but regulate and control the entire money supply. (With further bailouts allowed for their Democratic friends and of politicians.). This will be done by $50 billion in accounts set aside for that purpose. (Sounds like they aren’t sure of their so-called reforms). The conclusion is they don’t care for the public, and they’re bent on making people and America into a European state, controlled and dependent on the federal government. (You can make a difference! Stand up! Live Free and work every day for freedom)!

hatchet work hasn’t changed since last year’s Salem Patriot diatribes. As we know, some things never do change, but his lie-filled prose seldom has much to do with what he’s criticizing; case in point, my Sarah Palin/Tea Party article of last week. First, Mr. Glander, nobody but a dirty- minded ignoramus would misconstrue my “middle-school cheerleader”/Palin comparison with the filthy insinuation you gave it, which immediately begs the question of what you spend much of your own time “envisioning.” Pretty despicable, even for as nasty a conservative “writer” as you are. Then you laughably take my one comment about Palin mistaking New Hampshire with the “Great Northwest,” add in several past statements by her that I’ve never even mentioned nor written about that called into question her national-stage credentials, and falsely conclude that I called her “stupid,” though my entire letter doesn’t have one mention of the word. Sarah Palin certainly doesn’t qualify as “stupid” (your word), Mr. Glander, but for a supposed GOP icon, she’s certainly said a bunch of “stupid” things. Here are a few of them; some familiar, some not: • Continuously and falsely calling Barack Obama a Muslim during the 2008 presidential campaign. Labeling his healthcare proposals a “death panel” for the elderly. Those lies, along with her now-classic quote of Obama “palling around with terrorists” regarding his former relationship with Bill Ayers, made her campaign stops a study in ugly, violent ignorance, with her hate-filled fans screaming “Kill him!” “Traitor,” and other dangerous, anti-Obama rants while she smiled from the stage.
• Demonizing Obama’s proposed healthcare bill over and over again, while admitting in several of the interviews that as a child, she and her family often went over the border to Canada to take advantage of their single-payer plan. That’s sure making your point.
• Last year, claiming that the new Democratic White House switched the inscription “In God We Trust” to the edge of the dollar presidential coin from the center. In truth, this wasn’t a recent redesign at all—the “anti-Christian” change had been made back in 2005 by the Republican-controlled Congress and signed off by President George W. Bush. An addendum: when the Democrats took control of the House and Senate in 2007, they were the ones who changed the inscription back to the center. So much for Democrats wanting to “secularize” everything.
• Hilariously criticizing
Obama for utilizing a teleprompter for his speeches (as virtually all politicians and many entertainers do), and then infamously being immortalized on television reading interview answers from her palm. Then she compounds it by later comparing herself to God by citing the Biblical Isaiah verse 49:16, claiming that as the quote says, “‘writing on your palm’ was good enough for God, it’s good enough for me.”
And so much more, Mr. Glander. Sure, that’s who we want running America.
Another Glander distortion was claiming that I “expressed amazement” for the peaceful rallies the week before in Concord and Boston. Anyone who read my piece knows that I was sincerely complimenting the participants from both sides who took the time to show up, much as I did last November when writing about the Concord universal healthcare rally, which I attended. Leave it to Glander to bring disingenuous negativity to what was a totally positive statement. And you called the Palin fans “lowly peasants,” Mr. Glander. Not me. Finally your tired, worn description
of liberals having “profound arrogance and condescension” is another yawn- inducer, as all they and centrists like myself are trying to do is prevent America from regressing back to the four-corner collapse of the past decade, unlike you and your ilk. Still, I hope you “keep those letters coming” as well—they’re all good for a guffaw or three. But in the future, instead of paraphrasing what you wish I’d written, it may help your specious arguments by sticking to what’s really there. A concept that remains awfully difficult for you.

Animal Cruelty Awareness
Thumbs up to the kind-hearted person
worried about the Yellow Lab on a short rope. You might not realize that you’re witnessing a crime. For the sake of the animal you’re worried about, please contact the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (
NHSPCA.org) at 772-2921, ext. 111. Their site describes exactly what
you’re seeing (http://www.nhspca. org/community-services/
agent.html): “Animal cruelty encompasses a range of behaviors harmful to animals, from neglect to malicious killing. Most cruelty investigated by humane officers is unintentional neglect that can be resolved through education.
Intentional
cruelty, or abuse, is knowingly depriving an animal of food, water, shelter, or veterinary care or maliciously torturing, maiming, mutilating, or killing an animal. Animal ‘hoarding’ is a situation that happens when someone has collected so many animals that they are unable to provide proper care for them. In New Hampshire, there are numerous laws that protect the welfare of animals.” To report neglect or cruelty, call 772-
2921, ext. 111. The NHSPCA wants you to know that
the following are all illegal: • Failure to provide food, water, shelter, and proper veterinary care
• Abandonment, serious neglect, abuse, poisoning, and torture are all types of animal cruelty
• Leaving an animal in a very hot or very cold vehicle
• Carrying a loose dog in the back of a pick-up truck. You might also call the local police.
you are in any doubt about what to say, call the NHSPCA first. The NHSPCA will keep your identity confidential. You can help the dog choking on a short run. Call 772-2921, ext. 111.
