Pelham Baseball Earns First Win

by Chris White

The Pelham baseball team defeated the visiting Milford Spartans, 5-2, last Thursday to pick up its first win of the season. After playing well, but coming up short in a 6-5 loss at Monadnock three days earlier, the Pythons deservingly garnered a victory to show for their efforts. “We’ve played well in the last couple of games, and today, we put it together to get the win,” Pelham coach Matt

who had a big day both on the mound and at the plate against Milford. On the hill, the senior went the distance for the win, striking out 14 batters and giving up four hits. He held Milford’s lineup scoreless through six, but allowed two runs in the final inning. The Pythons took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third and tacked on three more runs between the fourth

and sixth innings. Offensively, Moran contributed three hits and four RBIs. Senior Josh Luciano also provided two hits and one RBI, while scoring three runs. Infielder Jesse Vaiknoras and catcher Evan Sage each scored one run as well. The Pythons turned in strong efforts

the win in four and a half innings, thanks to the mercy rule. The final score was 23-2. Pelham’s pitcher, Amanda Levesque, worked the entire game to pick up the win. The senior allowed only one earned run on seven hits, while striking out three batters. She also did a good job of fielding her position, going 3-3 in fielding opportunities. Offensively, there were a number of Pythons

who provided run support. Shortstop Gina Grimes led the team in hits, going 3-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Meanwhile, first baseman Kathryn Mostone drove in five runs to lead Pelham in RBIs, as she went 2-4 at the plate and scored one run. Third baseman Shaylyn Freitas and catcher Amanda Blake also had good days at the plate, as each of them submitted two hits, three runs, and four RBIs. Alex Hall additionally contributed one hit, one run, and one RBI, while Hannah Schaffer added one hit and two runs. Levesque helped her own cause as well, drawing three walks, scoring three runs, and collecting one RBI. Shelby Jutras drew two walks for two runs and an RBI, and Emma Notini scored one run.

The Pelham defense

was also solid. Grimes, Freitas, Mostone, Schaffer, and Blake were presented with a number of fielding opportunities and did not commit a single error. Pelham’s defensive prowess and its explosive offense were essential parts in earning its first victory of the spring. “We came out of our shells with the bats and took care of business,” Pelham coach Todd Lozeau said of his team’s offensive production.

River, the Pythons lost to Monadnock by the score of 7-4 on the road, but did not make any errors. The offense was led by Grimes, who went 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. The team then dropped contests to Milford and ConVal to bring its record to 1-6 on the season. Pelham’s next game will

be on Friday, May 7, at 4:15 p.m. against Hollis- Brookline.

in every aspect of the game, including their defense. Pelham’s ability to limit mistakes in the field made a significant difference, Stone said. “Our infield played great,” he explained. “It was our first error-free game of the season, and it just goes to show how important it is to take care of the baseball.” The win was just what Pelham needed after losing to Monadnock by one run in eight innings the previous Monday. Moran led the Pelham offense with three hits, a home run, and two RBIs in the defeat. Luciano also submitted two hits and drove in two runs, while Sage had two hits and played solid defense behind the plate.

After thwarting Milford, Pelham’s record stands at 1-5 on the young season. The team’s next game will be at home against Hollis-Brookline on Friday, May 7, at 4:15 p.m.
