Music in Our Schools

nder the leadership of Mrs. Doyle-Frisher, Hempstead High School’s Orchestra is on the move! On March 19th, 2010, they had a photo

opt with Senator Kemp Hannon where they also played a selection. Then, on March 25th, 2010, they performed alongside the prestigious Long Island Philharmonic Orchestra (LIPO). This concert, held in Hempstead High School’s auditorium, featured the talents of the elementary, to middle, to high school students, allowing the beginners, intermediate, and advanced students to perform alongside professionals. This rare opportunity gave the students the chance to play under the directorship of Maestro David Wiley, the renowned LIPO conductor, and gain a different sense of music’s oral perception.

The performance was well received. Hempstead High School’s Orchestra received a standing ovation from the audience as they started out with “Allegro in D,” moved on to “Emperor Waltz” and finished off with a bang with “Arlington Sketches.” The students received thunderous praise, and beamed with pride as they saw the delightful faces of their parents and siblings, who were looking on in the audience.

The idea to have Hempstead students play alongside a professional orchestra was conceived by Mr. Perez, Hempstead High Schools Music Director, and Mrs. Frisher, Hempstead High School’s Orchestra Director. Their main reasoning behind this endeavor was to give the students more exposure, because many of the students never had the opportunity to take professional lessons or play alongside experienced musicians. Additionally, this performance was just the first step in the continuing revival of the orchestra that has grown significantly from 8 to 30 performers in the past ten years. In the near future, Mrs. Frisher is trying to take the orchestra electric, with workshops that give the students the opportunity to play with electric

instruments. Additionally, she is aspiring to bring their playing level from where it is now to a level five. Mrs. Frisher is quoted as saying, “we may not be Juilliard, but we want to get as close as possible.”

All of Hempstead High Schools Orchestra members want to express their sincere gratitude to Mrs. Frisher for her dedication and hard work. Even with an injured leg, she still gave individual lessons and mass rehearsals. Ms. Frisher continues to inspire her students through her kind actions.
