Her skin glowing gorgeously, hair blowing in the gentle wind and legs as long as lamp posts attracting the awed eyes of every other person on the beach. Suddenly our hands drop from our sides, our mouths open in shock and we can think only one, single thought – why, oh why were we not blessed with the natural ability to look that freakin’ gorgeous on the beach?! But, enough is enough. There is absolutely no reason why we should not be able to take on the mighty gorgeousness of the seaside hottie, especially with some careful preparation.

SKIN DEEP

For soft, supple, summer skin your customers should be exfoliating two to three times a week. Herbie Dayal, CEO of KMI Brands, says: “Regular exfoliation leaves skin glowing and smooth as it buffs away the build up of thin layers of dead skin and stops pores from clogging.” For drier skin, exfoliating more frequently with a salt scrub can be more affective. Advise customers to pay particular attention to the knees, elbows, feet and the backs of the arms, which can all see a build up of dry skin. The best exfoliators are the ones that you apply to dry skin, adds head of training and treatment development at Decléor, Fiona Brackenbury: “The best exfoliators intensively condition the skin. But for sensitive skin, try dampening the skin before applying an exfoliating product as this will help the product to glide over it and cause less reddening and irritation.” Skin should be regularly moisturised

in the lead up to summer, particularly after exfoliating. Brackenbury says: “After exfoliation you must always moisturise intensively as you have just exposed brand new skin cells and they need gorging with moisture. A scaly, parched skin is instantly ageing, and won’t hold any form of tan – real or fake. On the other hand, well moisturised, plumped up skin looks fantastic and is the perfect canvas for fake tan and real tans. Even if you don’t want to tan but you want your legs to look slender and more toned, well moisturised skin can help achieve this.” Advise your customers

PROBLEM SOLVING

The appearance of stretch marks and cellulite can be a massive problem for customers in the lead up to summer. Unfortunately, both can be very stubborn to treat, but there are a few less known tips and tricks you can recommend to customers. Dayal says: “To reduce cellulite you must improve your diet and lifestyle, and introduce bodybrushing to your daily beauty regime.” Advising customers to up their intake of fruit, vegetables and protein, drink plenty of pure water daily, exercise at least three times a week and cut down on dairy products will complement body brushing techniques that boost circulation and break up fat cells. Brackenbury adds: “Simple things can have a dramatic effect on the appearance of cellulite – avoid crossing your legs as this will cause the circulation to be restricted. Avoid hot baths as the hot water damages collagen and elastin, making the skin slack causing cellulite to look worse. Massage your legs with a detoxing product - this helps enormously as the product will drain the toxins and the massage will help increase the action. And when you get home at night make sure you rest your legs. Sitting on the sofa with your legs up will help circulation.” Using a fake tanning product can also help to disguise cellulite and stretch marks. Brackenbury recommends a gradual tanning moisturiser for those new to stronger fake tanning products. She says: “Gradual tanners are so easy to apply and have a built in moisturiser so the skin glows from the gradually developing tan and moisture.” For stretch marks, massaging your skin

everyday with moisturiser or a massage glove can help to improve circulation, encouraging new tissue to grow and reducing their appearance, says Dayal. It is also important to eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins E and C, zinc and silica to help keep skin healthy.

• Brush dry skin before getting into the shower. You can use either a loofah, exfoliating glove or a body exfoliating brush. Start at the soles of the feet and work your way up. • Get into the bath or shower and wet your entire body. • Apply exfoliating cleanser to your loofah or exfoliating brush or gloves. Scrub your body with it, using gentle, circular motions. • Choose exfoliating cleansers that contain ingredients such as oatmeal, ground almonds or sea salt. The grainy texture exfoliates the skin, leaving it soft to the touch. • If you prefer, make your own exfoliating cleanser. Simply mix together sea salt, olive oil and lemon juice with some ground almonds and powdered milk.

• On rough spots such as heels and elbows, exfoliate with a pumice stone or pumice stick. • Apply a lotion containing alpha or beta hydroxy acids after you exfoliate. This will continue the exfoliating process because the acids continue to remove dead skin cells. • Always use body moisturisers at least once every day. Regular exfoliating is extremely drying to the skin, so regular moisturising will help to keep it hydrated.
