ASSISTANT PROFILE

Natalie Martufi is shop manager at Ormonde Jayne in Harrods. She gives us the lowdown on managing the store, selling fragrances and answering customers’ tricky questions

founder Linda involves me in product development, so I get to smell and test all the new products.

How did you become a counter assistant?

Professionally, I am a make up artist and applied for the job because of the beauty aspect. I have since been through extensive training at Ormonde Jayne and now when I smell the commercial fragrances I used to buy, I can’t understand how I ever wore them –I have become a perfume expert!

What are customers’ most commonly asked questions?

PERSONAL

I am considered the leading lady/front of house for the shop. It is my business to make sure that the store runs smoothly, to stock take and to keep a diary of the day-to-day events. My normal working day involves serving our clients, helping them understand the brand if they are new and explaining the products in detail. I also make sure that all Internet orders are checked for fraud and then forward them

The most commonly asked questions are ‘What is the most popular scent?’ and ‘Do they last long on the skin?’. If we are asked a question we don’t know the answer to, we talk through the question with the customer to see if we can provide an answer after discussion. Otherwise we will offer to research their question in depth and return to them with a thorough answer.

Ormonde Jayne Candle

The fragrances of Ormonde Jayne’s candles permeate throughout my house. My absolute favourites are Casablanca Lily and Osmanthus.

What sort of training do you receive as part of your job?

Before beginning work at Ormonde Jayne we train for two weeks and take a multiple choice exam, in which we have to get 100%.

How do you prepare for the

introduction of new products in-store?

On average, Ormonde Jayne launches one new product or perfume per year. I am quite involved on a weekly basis, so by the time it is launched I know everything there is to know about the product.

How do you decide what product to recommend to a customer?

To fi nd which of the lovely scents will best suit a customer Linda created an innovative system called Perfume Portrait. This is a fantastic way to fi nd a perfume for our clients. It is a short questionnaire and the clients are introduced to a number of raw ingredients which then helps direct us to the right scent for each person.

How do you take your own scent from day to night?

At the moment I favour Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, a semi-oriental, which is good for day and night. It is such a beautifully constructed fragrance and is truly one of the crown jewels in Linda’s collection. And, best of all, I always receive fantastic compliments when I wear it.

What is your most treasured beauty tip?

Always have lipstick at hand because it instantly makes you look ready to go.
