Lions Club presentation
Nearly £8,000 was given to representatives of various charities at a presentation organised by the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions Club.
The money was raised at this year’s New Year’s Day Dip in which more than 100 dippers, wearing fancy dress, took part in the annual plunge in the sea at Cawsand beach.
Club president Lion Mike Cramp, who made the presentations, said: ‘This was a sterling effort and hopefully next year will be even better.’
Charities receiving cheques included the Whitsand Bay Surf Lifesaving Club, Great Ormond Street Hospital, the Echo Centre in Liskeard, Help for Heroes, the British Liver Trust, Clic Sargent and Torpoint and Millbrook Explorer Scouts.
Money was also raised for BLESMA, Macmillan Cancer Support, DEBRA, Ellie’s Haven, the Merlin Project, Children’s Hospice South West, St Luke’s Hospice in Plymouth, Chernobyl Children’s Sunflower and the Rame First Responders.
Scouts target jamboree
Four Torpoint Scouts held a fundraising day at Torpoint library to help fund their trip to the 22nd World Scout Jamboree in Sweden next year.
They supplied coffee and tea, sold cakes and ran raffles to help raise money towards the £2,000 each one needs to attend the event.
Their hard work raised more than £90.
There are 36 Scouts from Cornwall attending the jamboree, with four from Torpoint and their leader Wez Swain, who recently completed a 12-day fundraising hike from Brownsea Island – the home of Scouting – to Torpoint.

Fundraising for allotments in Kenyanan village
Torpoint woman Linda Clarkson held a fundraising coffee morning at the town’s library to raise money for allotments in a village in Kenya.
Linda Clarkson receives help from Brownies Jessica, Grace and Teryl in selling cakes at the coffee morning.
She had cakes for sale, along with items made by villagers in Kikambala, a raffle and help from 2nd Torpoint Brownies who ran a ‘guess the name of the teddy’ and ‘how many sweets in a jar’.
The morning was well-supported and almost £200 was raised.
Linda is hoping to buy an acre of land when she visits Kikambala next month.
The land will then be split up into allotments for the villagers to grow their own food.
Linda and her husband Charlie will be making their fifth visit to this village and will spend three weeks there.
