Sam’s mother skydives for regiment cash
The mother of a Torpoint soldier killed in Afghanistan has jumped out of a plane to raise money for her son’s former regiment.
Coline Bassett took part in a sponsored skydive to kick-start her fundraising efforts, through which she hopes to raise £10,000 for The Rifles Charity.
Her son, Sam Bassett, died aged 20, following an explosion in northern Helmand on
Remembrance Sunday of last year.
Coline, along with her friends and family, have so far raised £5,000 for the charity, with much of that coming from sponsorship for her skydive.
She said: ‘The jump was absolutely brilliant.
‘After a couple of months of preparation and fundraising it was all over in just a few seconds.
‘I thought I’d have time to have a little chat with Sam on the way down but suddenly I was plummeting to earth at 120mph and before I knew it I’d landed.
‘My family and friends were there to support me and, of course, the weather was fantastic.’
Cash for Cub Pack
The 2nd Torpoint Hawks Cub Pack has received £100 from the 1730 Club. The money will help them with transport costs this year, including the coach needed to take them to the St George’s Day Parade in Saltash.

Brownies aid Cornwall Air Ambulance
The 2nd Torpoint Brownies helped the Cornwall Air Ambulance when they handed more than 25,000 used postage stamps to the Chief Executive of the charity.
The Brownies have collected and donated stamps to charities over a number of
years but this is the most they have given at one time.
Paula Martin visited the Brownies to receive the stamps and gave the girls an illustrated talk on the work of the Air Ambulance.
