UU choirs perform Mozart’s Requiem Mass

Heart & Hand auction follows May 22

Some 60 voices accompanied by an orchestra will perform excerpts from Mozart’s famous Requiem Mass in May at two area Unitarian Universalist locations. The choirs from the Valley Unitarian Universalist Church (VUU) and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Phoenix (UUCP) will join together with a 13-piece orchestra for their annual All Music Services under the direction of VUU Director of Music Ministries Kellie Walker, with UUCP Music Director Connie Jahrmarkt performing as principal violinist. The free performances will be during the 10:30 a.m. service on Sun., May 2 at the VUU and again at 10:30 a.m. on Sun., May 9 at UUCP.

“We like to alternate between a major sacred classical work and more contemporary large works or collections of choral pieces around a theme such as praise or peace,” explains Walker. “This is our year for a classical work and the beautiful but challenging piece by Mozart is a wonderful choice for this spring. Working together is always a good bonding experience for us, and gives us opportunities to get to know the singers at the other church. Mozart’s stirring music will be an inspiration to our congregations and to visitors who attend the free

service. It is a timeless piece with broad themes of justice and the comfort of eternal peace.”

‘Swing’ for San Tan Christian

A new Christian middle school in Chandler is holding a golf tournament fundraiser to raise $25,000 for curriculum and technology for their students.

“Swinging for Educational Excellence” for San Tan Christian Academy starts at 6:30 a.m. Sat., May 22 at Lone Tree Golf Club, 6262 S. Mountain Blvd. at Gilbert and Riggs roads in S. Chandler.

The four-person scramble with a shotgun start features U.S. Open Champion Steve Jones from “On the Tee” radio program along with prizes, raffles and a chance to win a new BMW. Corporate sponsorships are still available, as are scholarships. Cost is $85 per player or

$325 for a foursome.

About two years ago, a group of lawmakers, educators, public servants, artists and local business owners came together with a similar vision for a Christian middle school in the Chandler area. Today it’s a reality with San Tan Christian Academy

located at 501 W. Flint St. in Chandler. “We understand that the middle school years are major transitional years and STCA wants it to be a positive time of growth for our students,” says Founding Administrator Ruth Zappe. “The understanding of what they believe deepens into understanding why they believe. Students

are afforded many opportunities to grow in godly behaviors while having fun along the way. It is our prayer that STCA will be a source to help students find out God’s plan for their lives.”

Now accepting student applications for sixth-grade for fall and interest cards for seventh- and eighth-grade students, the first day of class will be Mon., Aug. 2. To sign up for the golf tourney, contact Debi LaVergne at 602-809-8492.Visit www.santanchristianacademy.org for details about the school.
