Record crop of citrus picked

Sun Lakes Citrus Sharers, a volunteer group that picks surplus fruit in all Sun Lakes communities on request, harvested 15 tons of grapefruits, lemons, oranges and tangelos during its annual campaign in March. The harvest is donated to the United Food Bank.

The tonnage is a record for the group, which began picking in 2007, according to publicist Larry Kurtz. Last year’s collection totaled 11 tons. A total of nearly 50 volunteers visited 180 homes, picking fruit from some 300 trees – about 150 grapefruit, 80 oranges, 60 lemons and a few tangelos and tangerines. Some residents picked their own fruit and delivered it to the group’s collection site or requested a pickup by a volunteer.

United Food Bank ships a portion of the collection to other states and, in turn, receives crops from other areas to meet special needs in Arizona. UFB said that Citrus Sharers donations last year helped nearly 17,500 people. This year’s haul pencils out to help some 22,916.

For more information about the group, which picks free of charge, contact Marge Mickey at 480-895-2707 or Sarah Kelzenberg at 480-802-5741 or eskelz@wbhsi.net.
