Cyclists Return for Season of Great Rides

A

long with everything else this time of year, the cycling season is bursting into full bloom, and MAC’s Cycling Committee programs are fully up and running. The Tuesday night ride series rolls exactly like in years past … only it happens on Wednesday nights and is now known as the Wednesday night rides. The series continues every week through October. These rides afford all participants the

opportunity to gain one-on-one instruction for becoming more efficient and safe on their bikes. Riders are divided into groups based on ability and their individual inter- ests as they relate to achieving their goals. Staging for the Wednesday night ride series begins at 5:45 p.m. and the cyclists take off at 6 p.m. sharp. On the first Wednesday of the month, riders meet at Sauvie Island School. To get there, cross the bridge and take the first right turn on Reeder Road. The school is on the right about 2.5 miles from the turn off of Highway 30.

On second Wednesdays, cyclists meet at the intersection of Skyline and Germantown roads. The third Wednesday ride returns to Sauvie Island and the fourth rides of the month change depending on interest. Further information and

up-to-date details on the rides can be found at the MAC cycling group website: http://sports.group.yahoo.com/group/ MACCycling. For months with a fifth Wednesday (June and September), check the website for the location.

Second Saturday Rides

This month’s second Saturday Ride on May 8 is approximately 35 miles long and features a spin around scenic Hagg Lake. Cyclists should meet in the parking lot of McMenamins Grand Lodge in Forest Grove at 8:45 a.m. and be ready to roll by 9:15 a.m. This ride includes an opportu- nity for lunch at McMenamins after the event.

As in the past, second Saturday rides increase in mileage and elevation gain as the season progresses. All rides are doable for anyone who can average 12 miles per hour on flat roads. It is mandatory that all riders wear a helmet at all times while on their bikes and carry tools and a spare tube in the event of flat tires. Riders also are encouraged to carry a cell phone and include the number when they sign the waiver prior to the ride.
