’ve been getting plenty of advice on how to run the club. Thank you. Many of the advisors have been past presidents. After several minutes of one-way conversation, mainly they close with, “Just don’t mess it up,” or words to that effect. One area of
continuing advice comes
from the Sounding Boards. The forms are located at each entrance and allow you to communicate directly with the board and management on things you like and dislike about the club. I read all of them each month (70 in February and 61 in March). If you give your name and ask for a response, manage- ment will respond to you. Please be as specific as possible with dates, times and locations. Anyway, there have been numerous
Sounding Boards about Zumba, apparently a relatively new form of group exercise that has gained popularity. So I decided to give it a try to see what all the hubbub was about. I knew there might be a problem when before the class, former Treasurer Lori Hesse asked, “Are you going to Zumba class?” So with a heightened sense of confidence I ventured into the class. It’s mainly a series of aerobic Latin dance routines. After 15 minutes I went anaerobic and stayed there for the rest of the hour. A passerby noted that it looked like I was several steps behind the instructor. Nonetheless, it was a great workout. I can see it is great cross training for many sports, including all racket sports. I took ibuprofen after the class and slept with a hot pad. I was fine the next day. I’ll be back!
Committee challenges
The new committee year started
April 1. I was pleased to be invited to the sport committee orientation put on by Athletic Committee Chair David Horstkotte. I chal- lenged the sport chairs on several fronts: • Improve your sport both competitively and recreationally. • Look for new ideas from your committee, your coaches, the staff and your participants. Look at other clubs in the area and around the country. We need to stay rele- vant to all of our 17,000 resident members.
• Invite new members into your sport.
Phil Juckeland
President
We need to be more welcoming to new members and we need to make it easier for current members to try new sports. • If your sport has a major project you want funded, start building your case now. There are many hurdles and it can take many years to get it approved. One area the board and Strategic Planning Committee identified for emphasis this year is to continually look for new ways to engage members. We need to encourage the development of new “communities” of common interest as large, formal gatherings are replaced by more targeted activities and and events in casual settings. To this end, the board has created an ad hoc communities committee under the lead- ership of Julie Vigeland to address this goal.
Great Escape Suitcase Party
MAC introduces the Great Escape Suitcase Party Friday, May 14. Pack your bags and come to the club for some fun and excitement and, for a lucky couple, a fabu- lous weekend trip. See page 27.
Easter Brunch success
Kudos to Food and Beverage Director Cameron McMurry, Executive Chef Philippe Boulot and the entire food and beverage staff for a fabulous Easter Brunch. It was a great feast and a good value. Many tables had three generations of MAC members, continuing a great tradition.
MAC trivia
I hope you enjoy the MAC trivia. We have a rich history with many events and incidents that show what a resilient club we have. There were two winners last month and many who got it right but were too late. The first clubhouse burned to the ground on July 14, 1910, just 10 years after it was built. Some presidents have a gift for words. When women “asked” to become full members with the right to vote and be on committees, the president called it “the women problem”! We’ve come a long way. For lunch for you and a guest in the
Men’s Bar: What day and year did women first vote at a MAC annual meeting? Send your answer to
