says. “In high school, people have to be there, but in masters, people want to be here.”

Being a coach is different than being a swimmer, too. “I am really good at explaining technique, and I’m in a sport that I love, that I’m passionate about, without having to swim five hours a day,” she says. And yet she says she would like to keep swimming and compete. “I’m excited to get back into it,” she says. “My goals have changed. I love swimming, but instead of being the best, I like to be involved in the sport that I love. It’s exciting to be a part of it, in a different role than before: to help others in their athletic pursuits.”

Short-course yards meets

January brought a new year and a new swim season for the MAC masters swim- mers. While the open water swimmers were still deep in hibernation, the pool swimmers went to the first two short- course yards meets of the year. The first meet was the annual Chehalem meet in Newberg held

Jan. 30. Mike Dowd, Eric Wan and Brent Washburne represented the MAC team in both individual and relay events. Wan and Washburne swam a mixed 400-yard medley relay in the middle of the meet and came up two seconds short of the Oregon and Northwest Zone record. They tried again at the end of the meet in a mixed 35-plus 400-yard freestyle relay, along with Oregon swimmers Megan Lassen and Arlene Delmage. This time they shattered the five-year old Oregon and zone records by about 25 seconds.

2nd, men’s 45-49 50-yard breaststroke – Washburne

The second meet was the annual Animal Masters meet, held in Canby Feb. 14. The same trio of swimmers attended this meet. Wan successfully defended his title in the sprint triathlon, making him the winner two years in a row. He had the fastest cumulative time for the 100-yard individual medley, 50-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle of the 12 other swim- mers in all the age groups. Wan came in first in the men’s 40-44 age group for all three events, and Washburne came in first in the men’s 45-49 age group for the same events. Dowd chose the “animal,” or grand triathlon, by swimming the 400-yard individual medley, 200-yard butterfly and 1,000-yard freestyle. He came in second place in the men’s 50-54 age group for all three events.
