he youth handball clinics held at MAC each week by Coach Kristen Steele do more than introduce youngsters to the game of handball. The nature of the sport is ideal for the development of critical hand-eye coordination skills, footwork and symmetry. The three-dimensional aspect of the game – with the ball approaching from above, below, from the flanks and from the rear – requires a novice player’s great focus just to track the ball. Throw in the fact that the target (the handball) and the striker (the hand) are both small. For good measure the game requires competence striking the ball with both the left and right hands, which adds the requirement of advanced footwork and the coordination challenges of symmetry. In this sense, handball offers the new player an unparalleled vehicle for developing complex hand-eye coordination skills, balance and footwork, all while having fun. Steele holds open clinics on a regular
basis, combining play time on the court with basic instruction depending on the level of the player. The participants show up ready to play ball and have fun. The equipment and court time are provided. The average age at the clinics is 11 or 12 years old, but the range is large, as some of the parents get in to the act.
Several players in particular have been
consistently participating and becoming increasingly proficient. Players Austin Biddle, Ava Frobe and Van Mathias have all competed in national and/or world tourna- ments, and continue to steadily improve. New players Windra Bodine and Matthew Young are also showing improvements in their games, as seen with longer rallies and more consistency in serving. The free drop-in clinics are usually
Wednesdays from 6-7 p.m. on courts 1-4. Notification of exact dates are sent out via email prior to each month. Anyone who would like to be on the junior hand- ball email contact list for notification of upcoming clinics should contact Robin Franklin at 503-517-7592. The Handball Committee is currently seeking a second coach to beef up this growing youth program. For more information on MAC handball, call 503-517-7592 or go to
